If price per roll is $12.00 CDN (which is good for about 8 wheels if using 3 layers) This equates to about $1.50 per wheel.. If it's $16.00 per roll would be $2.00 per wheel.. Personally I don't think that's too expensive.. Since a replacement rubber type oem rim strip from Dennis Kirk is $1.50US and doesn't work nearly as well..
To install clean the rim with contact cleaner and let it dry.. For the front wheel installed overall width about 1" to 1 1/8" (rim tape is 20mm wide).. Rear wheel installed overall width is about 1 1/4" to 1 3/8".. Personally I cover the complete trough area only.. Bead seat left for the tire bead.. It's a personal choice thing..

It costs more than that here at the bike shops. We have a hardcore cyclist culture here, mostly a bunch of Tour de France wannabes, but they love to brag about how much they paid for stuff, so nothing bike related is cheap.
Also, I would use a lot more of it than you do, I would use about 3 layers, which would equate to wrapping it around the wheel about 9 times, to cover the center and both sides. I use spray brake parts cleaner, because contact cleaner is so expensive. And yeah, it is a personal choice kind of thing. Jerry.
The above is my opinion. Your mileage may vary. 1994/2001 custom built XT225 with a ton of aftermarket parts.

Above I posted the exact rim tape I use.. With the distributors name and the part number.. Purchasing this product in Canada would be very easy but most probably would have to be special ordered in.. Even though I closed my bicycle store a few years ago I still have about 8 rolls here (and more of the other sizes available)..
If I didn't have this rim tape already and wanted to try it.. I would phone my local bicycle shop and ask if they purchase from "Cycles Lambert".. If they say yes.. Ask price on part number 02-3503-0.. If they quote you $16.00 then the price is fair.. If they quote you $40.00 ask if that price is correct.. If they say yes.. Try another bicycle store..
There are hardcore cyclist and wannabes everywhere.. I'll find the exact suggested retail price for this rim tape monday.. If you would like to try it that's up to you.. If you want to use 9 layers that's up to you, or continue to use your blue duct tape Brake cleaner and contact cleaner generally is the same thing.. Depend on how it's labeled.. In my shop I have cheaper "Generic Brand Brake Cleaner" as well as more expensive "Honda Brake and Contact Cleaner" and also have "PJ1 Contact Cleaner" Even though intended use is the same.. They each have different characteristics..
