I have a 1999 xt225 with electric start only.
I also have a 2002 xt225 with kick start only.
On the 2002 model the rear footrests are mounted on the swing arm, I’ve not seen one like this before. I had read that the electric start was first added in 1989 and a kickstart could be retro fitted. So what models have I got? Both will have originally been imported into the UK.

Maybe your 2002 is a TTR225 and not an XT? Maybe it's from another global market (South America, Asia, ...)? Got pics of it?
This shall pass, be still and know. 2006 XT225, UNI filter, ProTaper bars, MSR handguards, SS front brake line, Shinko 241's.

I think green and yellow graphics first showed up in 94, but that doesn't look like any of the graphics I've ever seen, maybe its custom?

The frame may be a 2002, but the rest of it looks like a piece together bike. Those rear foot rests look like Bubba's handiwork.

There were several different versions of the XT225/XT250 made for different markets. One even has a tubeless rear wheel and rear disc brake. That is definitely not the same as a U.S. model. The side covers and a few other things are different. I don't see any mounting tabs on the frame for the U.S. style passenger peg mounting brackets, but the swingarm mounted passenger pegs have foot guards on them, which makes me think they might be stock. My XT225 is made out of a 1994, a 2001, and a lot of aftermarket parts. It has a kickstarter, but that is not original, Over a decade ago, I ordered a kit online to install a kickstarter on the XT225. It included all the parts necessary. I have no idea where those parts came from, but I suspect they were from a non U.S. model. That kit is no longer available.
The above is my opinion. Your mileage may vary. 1994/2001 custom built XT225 with a ton of aftermarket parts.

The Japan model, which I have, has quite a few differences to the US model but the pillion footpeg locations aren't different, they are mounted to the frame, same as US. I had a Brazil model before, that was same pillion peg mounts also.
My '79 DT175mx had pillion pegs on the swing-arm, but it was a totally different swing-arm, crazy design.
Current: 1958 Ariel 650 FH, 2014 Tiger Sport1050, 1995 XT225 Serow, 2016 Tiger 800 XRx.
