Dallas Broussard here, just purchased my first bike(2003 xt225). I’ve used this forum before for some help along the way so far but needed to join to be able to cross my next obstacle. When I purchased the bike the speedometer wasn’t working, so after some research on here I found a broken speedo cable. After replacing that and still no working speedo I started to take apart and clean the gear unit assembly, which leaves me where I am now. The very last gear inside is STUCK!
Hello to all and ANY advice is appreciated

Sorry, I've never had to take that apart. Got pics of what you're looking at?
This shall pass, be still and know. 2006 XT225, UNI filter, ProTaper bars, MSR handguards, SS front brake line, Shinko 241's.

On my first front tyre change (bike was 18yrs old at that time) I stripped out the speedo drive, it was stiff, full of crud, all cleaned out & rebuilt, packed with waterproof grease. I re-do this on every tyre change which can be 2.5k to 3.5k miles depending on (enduro) tyre make/model. The crud has never got through since.
Maybe not so necessary on a road only bike but mine was primarily a trail bike ridden through rivers/streams/mud/etc.
Current: 1958 Ariel 650 FH, 2014 Tiger Sport1050, 1995 XT225 Serow, 2016 Tiger 800 XRx.

It was the the front wheel gear unit, I was unable to free the very last gear inside. With no choice I ordered a replacement. Installed it along with a new speedo cable and a new speedo bulb and voilà a well lit functioning speedometer!

Glad you got it fixed. Sometimes new OEM replacement parts are the best avenue in the long run. There is a wicket the speedo cable passes through. Over miles of riding and compression of the front shocks, that wicket can chafe through the speedo cable's outer sheath. You can use a 1" ID rubber grommet in there. If an after thought, cut the grommet with a razor, put it around the cable then press into the wicket so the cable can move but within the rubber. Secure with 3 small black nylon ties. I damaged 2 speedo cables before figuring this out. Ride safely and enjoy.

I am trying to think of this “wicket” u mention, just starting to rain here so I am unable to put my eyes on the bike atm. Is this the metal loop that guides the cable down? IIrc it’s that and a plastic clamp the guide the cable to the location?

Yes it's the metal loop the cable passes through before the plastic retainer near the brake caliper. Both our bikes wore through perfectly good speedo cables rubbing on the wire. I used to fix them with electricians tape. But a rubber grommet is better. Most of the riding we did was on trails. That works the suspension pretty hard and led to more rubbing. Some years back an OEM speedo cable was $50. A grommet is $1. Another problem we had was spoke nipples ripping out of the rim. Tape and tie wrap spoke crossings. When this happens it can get tangled up. If it rips loose from the hub (broken shoulder), it invariably punctures the inner tube. Taping and tie wrapping the crossings keeps spokes in place until you finish the ride. Just a couple of simple things we did that avoided hassles. Ride safely and enjoy.
