During normal road riding, what rpm do you up shift. I installed a tach and was just wondering. I was shifting about 4000rpm but did not know if that was too high or low. What is a safe max rpm you should stay within thanks chris

Shift points will differ due to riding conditions, and your mood. Main thing is not to lug it. Sometimes I shortshift mine, just above lugging it, but most of the time I wring it out pretty good. No matter how you shift it, it is not going to go fast, but with the Z1 modded pipe, at least it SOUNDS fast when run up through the gears at a good pace.
The above is my opinion. Your mileage may vary. 1994/2001 custom built XT225 with a ton of aftermarket parts.

Hi Chris, If you're looking at a tacho you're not watching the road.
All by feel going up, don't overrev it. Some feel changing down as it starts to object, but mostly 'experience' as you anticipate how your bike is going to respond to the changing circumstance eg. down 1 or 2 gears etc. That just comes with time on the bike.
My road bike has classic 70's style mechanical speedo and tacho sitting right up front. The only time I look at the tacho is just out of curiosity when I'm flying along in top gear on the open highway (and about all I get from this is thinking perhaps I really should get around to fitting that larger front sprocket).

I found I really have to rev mine out to keep up with car traffic, but then traffic is a lot faster here than most other places. I went to Arkansas about a year and a half ago, and I couldn't believe how slow the traffic was moving. Nobody there seems to be in a hurry. I also saw a lot less cell phone operators trying to drive. Here it is pedal to the metal from one light to the next, and if you don't move fast enough, you are likely to get run over.
The above is my opinion. Your mileage may vary. 1994/2001 custom built XT225 with a ton of aftermarket parts.

I have one bike at 13/45 too, and another at 13/55...I get out of 1st gear very quickly! There's so much extra torque with the second bike, that I usually ride around in 5th or 6th, because it's still so responsive.
