I routinely ride my 2016 XT250 on the local highways, and unlike our TW200 - it easily and happily holds 60. At 65, the engine is still singing along without complaint, but wind starts to become tiring. Not only due to lack of anything resembling a fairing, but it gets blown around rather easily. At 70, everything kinda sucks. All the above with stock gearing, which I wouldn't modify for my uses.

Compared to the 1990 XT225 I used to have, I'm in the camp of believing the XT250 is an improvement in every way. FI is awesome - if I never own another carb'ed bike, I'll be happy. I don't miss 6th gear in the least, and in fact - prefer the 5 speed. Nothing is missing on the top end, and I find 1st gear usable over a much wider range of conditions. Lack of aftermarket, larger tank options is a valid concern for some on the injected XT250, but not for me. It's insanely good on fuel, getting me 70MPG+ no matter how hard I ride it. Fuel light typically comes on around 120 miles, which handles 95% of my rides - and I've a Rotopax mount for the occasional longer back country rides.

Well I still have the DR650,at the moment anyway, but did just buy a brand new 2018 Yamaha XT250.The brakes feel weak but I am sure I will get used to that quickly.Great little bike and love the seat height having a 30" inseam.Fuel injection seems to be spot on and peppier than the XT225 for sure.No vibration out of the 250 anywhere through the rev range which is also nice. The DR650 does like to vibrate. Now to get a skidplate for some trail riding.

My biggest complaint on my 2017, is the LCD instrument panel.
I just can't see anything on it in bright daylight.

Having to push 2 buttons a couple of times to just reset the trip meter is not an improvement over older one button reset on my KLR650. I don't even use the "miles to empty" feature, or whatever it's called. Way to many features on new machines now.
Bring back analog speedo, tach, odo, and one trip meter (mechanical type)
(I'll admit my eyes are some of the problem, being almost 80)

I do like the FI, and power. I find my XT250 to be kind of loud, compared to the Honda NX250, water cooled. Haven't had opportunity to see how hard it is to lift up from a nap, but just lifting it off side stand it seems harder to bring upright than my NX250. ( The NX is a lower bike, so I suspect that's why it seems easier.)

Love that I can hit the starter, and it's running, and I can just toot off into the back roads right away. The NX takes some coaxing to do the same, but once it's been running, it will start instantly. Just cold starts are touchy.

As of June of this year I have returned to a DR650 after putting less than 400 miles on the XT250

Heh...I've put that many miles on my XT250 in a single day, several times. And, as of June this year, we picked up a second XT250 for my wife. Finally got her to ride mine and her TW200 was never ridden again.

I put 4K on my XT250 in the last 6 months. It's one of four bikes in the stable, but gets ridden much more than the others. I honestly couldn't say how many bikes I've owned in the last 40+ years, but the XT250 is at or near the top of faves.

Clearly it's not for everyone, as your experience shows - but that's why there's chocolate and vanilla. cool
