The valves can stay adjusted for a very long time on the XT, but they do wear, and as they wear, valve clearance decreases. Valve clearances change because of valve wear, not because of anything to do with the adjusters themselves. If valves and valve seats did not wear, there would be no need to adjust the valves, and they would not need adjusters. It is certainly possible to adjust the valves too loose, but as long as you stay within the tolerances the manual calls for, you will be fine. And by setting them to the loose end of spec, you are allowing for more valve wear before they need to be adjusted again. I have never noticed any performance problems from doing so.
The above is my opinion. Your mileage may vary. 1994/2001 custom built XT225 with a ton of aftermarket parts.

And, "thank you" again for your continued analysis of how things work...no matter that your analysis and conclusions are frequently incorrect, as they are now.

Will do! Question about those, I see the kits but do those ones that patch up the tube even work? Or do you recommend carrying extra tubes
Thanks I'm not the person to ask about tube repair. Some of our UK brothers and sisters that use their bikes everyday are masters at fixing flats...chime in please! Alexd

Uh who are you talking about here AlexD? If it is the post before this by JerryH - I basically agree with JerryH. No offence.

Uh who are you talking about here AlexD? If it is the post before this by JerryH - I basically agree with JerryH. No offence. Specifically JerryH, which should be apparent. Over time, there is an accumulated large list of things that he suggests that are simply incorrect, and often damaging. I notice you say "BASICALLY AGREE." Fine...you've never seen valve clearance INCREASE with time?! You think it's great to set your valves at the extreme loose specs?! We live in different worlds if this is true... Alexd

I haven't seen valve clearance increase on a bike with the type of adjusters we have on the XT. I suppose if you have unusual wear it could increase BUT under normal conditions I think it is usually the seat that recedes and the valve that wears and "cups" and that leads to a decrease in valve clearance. No clearance can lead to burnt valves. I think thats what JerryH said ??? or am I misunderstanding something ??? I haven't really noticed any of JerryH other posts so i'm only talking about this situation.

There is both truth and falsehood in his most recent statement; possibly why you "basically" agree with it (burnt valves, for instance, due to too little clearance). But, JerryH rarely is a short and succinct speaker, and the inaccuracies he presents abound.
I'm not the only one to have noticed this, there are several others...but to trot all the specific examples out, while perhaps not technically "flaming," would be pushing the Rules, and not be in the interest of this Site.

Suppose you can explain any other way valves can wear? Everyone but you seems to know already, but as valves and valve seats wear, and allow the valve stem to recede farther into the head, valve clearances DECREASE. When they decrease to a certain point, the valves no longer close close completely, and the valves burn. This is being stated as FACT, not as OPINION, as many of my other posts were. Perhaps you can explain IN DETAIL why it does not work this way, and how it actually does work according to you?
The above is my opinion. Your mileage may vary. 1994/2001 custom built XT225 with a ton of aftermarket parts.

Hi JerryH, C~V here! I appreciate that you contribute to this site. There are a lot of less experienced people and "first bike" types here and that knowledge is very helpful to everyone. AlexD is also a big contributer and I appreciate him too. I hope that both You and AlexD can on occasion agree to disagree and both of you keep contributing beacause I really appreciate and enjoy it! After all this is supposed to be fun. Lets not forget that. AlexD you are a passionate type and people that are passionate make the world interesting! Personally I realize that i won't be correct in all my posts and know to take all post with a grain of salt.

I always thought the whole valve train can wear, cams, followers and the end of the valves, which add together to increase clearances. This is worse on pushrod engines. I thought when you have double overhead cams acting directly on the valves via buckets and shims it is likely that clearances decrease.
