I've always lusted after a Black Shadow or a
Lightning. They were very innovative and technological masterpieces, with such great ideas as having the rear wheel reversable with a different size sprocket on either side of the hub so that turning the wheel around gave a different final drive.

Hi Jim,

Some really old bicycles also had reversible rear wheels with a freewheel gear on each side. The chain had two master links to change the length to accomodate each sprocket. I love simple ideas like that. Can you imagine how happy the guy was when that inspiration first came to him?

You can just see the beauty of it's mechanical intention...

Hey Greg,

Here's a link to a Black Shadow that recently sold on ebay. It was owned for a while by Peter Egan who sold it a couple years ago for $35k to pay off his house..... this time it fetched mid $60s....!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1950-Seri...1QQcmdZViewItem

I don't think that they'll ever be in my price range again. I missed my chance when I lived in London for a couple of years in the mid 70's
when you could still buy a like new Shadow for $2500. I regret not buying one then almost as much as selling my '55 Porsche Carrera Speedster for $5000. in 1980,

I apologize for hijacking this thread, but it's really Greg's fault for showing that beautiful Lightning.

Greg, thanks, again, for more great information. Yes, I will use a taller tire (19") but narrower. And I will take Mike's advice and allow for clearance.

The Dunlop K180 is a street-legal dirt track tire available in 110/80-19 size. On a 2.15" rim it has an O.D. of 26.2" and a width of 4.4". That may be too tight, in which case I'll go with the Kenda K761 or Pirelli MT90 Scorpion. They aren't dirt track tires but good dual purpose tires. The Kenda is available in a 100/90-19 at about 4" wide, and the Pirelli is available in a 90/90-19.

BTW, It looks like Buchanan is the best source for rims and spokes. They'll even build the wheels if I send them my hubs, but then my daughter will not learn how to lace a wheel. She also won't learn how to curse like a sailor if we don't lace the wheels ourselves.

MX-TECH East Coast Suspension in Enon Valley, PA USA can shorten the fork and shock springs for less than US$250, and modify the valving for another $200, if I ship them the forks and rear shock. New shorter springs would be $200.

Not to follow you off-track on my own thread, but...

If you really want to lust after an unaffordable bike, Bator just sold a Crocker Twin (one of only a few dozen made). The asking price was $200,000. These bikes regularly outran the Harleys and Indians on the dry lakes in the '30's.

Hey !
look at this one...
http://www.goodevestudio.com/dirtmerchantpics.htm

this custom bike was made for a contest named: "The Canadian Chopper Challenge". The start of this bike was a Yamaha dirt bike (I'm pretty sure it's a WRF450). It is called: "Dirt Merchant" & still has the yamaha 4 strokes engine bolted in. I saw also that it has the Kenda K761 tires.

Progress Report.

This is what happens when you give a toolbox to a 14-year old and tell her to remove all the stuff we don't need.

There were only two bolts she couldn't break loose (the lower triple tree pinch bolts). Other than that, she did all the work. By the way, that Sears motorcycle stand was the best $80 I've ever spent.

The forks and rear shock are at MX-Tech East being shortened to lower the bike 3".

Next we take the wheels apart and lace the hubs with a set of Sun rims, 2.15 x 19" front and 2.50 x 18" rear, and mount the Dunlop K180 dirt track tires. I chose the Dunlop which is available only with an 18" rear because they were supposed to be DOT labeled, but they aren't. I think there was a limited production street legal version. Oh well--next time. Rims, spokes and tires came from A&A Racing.

The Champion style tank and seat arrived from Omar's and they look great. To make them fit on the frame I'll have to grind down the stock tank mounts and remove the grab handles and helmet lock. After the tank and seat are fit up, my daughter gets to paint them.

By the way, the tank had to be sent out to be coated to protect the fiberglass from the Ethanol in pump gas and E85.

Stay tuned for further developments.

UPDATE: One wheel built, one to go.

As I hoped my daughter and I had a fun Father's Day lacing and truing the front wheel. She enjoyed tearing apart the old wheel and lacing the new one. The pre-drilled rim made the job fairly simple...just line up the spokes in the holes and follow the pattern (cross-3, outer spokes point clockwise, inner spokes counter-clockwise).

Also as I suspected my daughter learned some new words due to my mistake in getting the spoke pattern wrong--twice. She caught my error the second time so she is learning fast. She was bored by truing after the first five minutes, but most folks are.

Tech tip: You must insert ALL the spokes in the front hub BEFORE you begin attaching them to the rim. Also, start attaching the inside spokes first because you can swing the outer spokes over them.
