So tonight, to celebrate my new job, I decided to visit a local pub for a curry and a couple of beers. All was going well, when one of our group had to leave to catch his train (Harold from this site). So that left me with Debs & Paula. Everything was going fine until I paid a visit to the loo (upstairs) to find a bloke panned out on the floor. it turned out that he'd been out with a few friends, had no more than 4 single G n T's then collapsed at the top of the stairs and cracked his head on the way down.

Who should walk up there but me. So even after I've had 4 pints of beers and a damned fine curry, I jumped into action and looked after the chap until the ambulance arrived.

It seemed like hours but must have only been 10 to 15 minutes before the pro's arrived.

Isn't it amazing that a bit of training goes a long way.

So I hope that David Pike from Bury is OK after putting up with me for all that time!

You guys, if you haven't done a first aid course yet (and even better a bike first on scene course) then do it.

Nice job Reggie! I was fortunate to be a part of search and rescue years ago and received some valuable training that I carry with me to this day. CPR, First responder, and bloodborne pathogens, mostly by the age of 14! Was very lucky- got me in good with the cops too:-)
That guy was lucky to have you around!

Hi Reggie,
I went on a 1st Aid course many years ago, sent by my employer when I worked at Knutsford Services on the M6.
The very next week I was called upon for my services, I was really bricking it as I hurried out to the lorry park, trying too remember what to do.
Needn't have worried the guy was in the sleeper part of his truck and had been dead for a few hours, was my 1st dead body though.
I did spend a while calming down the poor girl who he was on top of when he croaked, seemed she was unable to get from under him, and her cries for help went ignored or unheard for a couple of hours. She was about half his age, seems the exitement was too much for him.
Police came after me and wouldn't touch him, took my word for it that he was dead, then ambulance came, checked his pulse and went, I had to wait for another hour for a van to come and take him.

Bloody Hell Ben,

you didn't get a gentle start into First Aid did you! I'm just wondering if the lady involved with the driver was his partner or of a more, shall we say 'professional' nature?

I did my First Aid course when I worked in the software business and, when the bosses wife was taken seriously ill, I went on a defib course and was issued with a portable kit in my car. I got the boss and his daughter trained up and issued with their own defib kit and several units in the building. The old lady's life was prolonged as a result, so all the investment was worth every penny.

I did a fire fighting course as well and used some of the skills learned over the years.

I learned all my "medical" skills behind the bike sheds at school!!!

Although, I did get some more training in the Army. If you get shot or you discover a limb missing, I'm your man.

It's funny how you end up using these skills throughout your life though. I went to the works Xmas party this year and ended up doing the heimlch manoeuvre on a mate who was choking. He was very grateful but I was lucky I didn't get the sack for "inapropriate sexual behaviour" ha ha. I felt dirty afterwards I'm not used to getting that close to men, especially from BEHIND!!!

Lucky for David Pike that you were there Reggie, and that you had what it took to look after him until the ambulance crew arrived. Good show!

Hi George,

after a bit of good training it's amazing how it just flows when needed. You just do your best, keep calm and most importantly treat the patient with dignity, whilst keeping them informed of what and why you're doing, what you're doing. We're really lucky in the UK in having fantastically short responce times from emergency crews.

At least you'll be able to keep the ladies amused until the medics arrive!!
