I second that.
When I did the work on my bike, sandblasting and welding were things I left to other people - I do not possess the gear and I've never learned how - so your project is a lot more hands-on. I sit in awe of what you've done, it looks superb.
That bike is going to look fantastic when it's finished.

Ok, I finalized the article, part 6 is now live! You can get to it from the same link above.
A lot more wording, and a new picture or 2 from the rough draft.
It reads much more personal and gives much more direction now, than my scribble of thoughts that the rough draft was.
People ask if I am a Motorcyclist or a Biker. I say "Yes". I am a Rider. I ride to ride for my own reasons. Whether it be to work, or to that little burger joint just down the road 300 miles away.

Lookin' good Mic. If by the time I get to it someone hasn't already provided a measurement for the length of the stub you asked about I will. Sounds like your project is finally taking the sort of shape that makes it all worthwhile. And I agree with your solution on the troublesome bearing race. Those who've grown up making things work instead of throwing them away will appreciate your approach!

I work on a wide variety of cars and trucks and find that taking digital photos of certain jobs helps me to remember how to reassemble things. And don't forget to load the photos into your computer just in case you inadvertently erase them from your camera! Great idea, using the blind-hole bearing remover on the wheel bearings!

Length of exposed nub is 23mm.. This was measured using a vernier measuring depth from "top of the head to start of the plate" (does not inc plate thickness) P.S. I also have an older xt225 frame that I bought off Ebay.. Nub on this frame is welded on.. IMHO just tapping the plate and using a bolt only won't be strong enough to support the spring tension and torque and twisting from spring plate

IMHO just tapping the plate and using a bolt only won't be strong enough to support the spring tension and torque and twisting from spring plate I actually thought about the whole tension issue. I believe, if I thread it, screw it past the back plate, and put a nut with torque on the nut, that way it creates preloaded tension on the bolt, that should be more than enough to hold it in place, and not cause an issue. I'm going to think it through though.
