Hello to all, I'm Dave and I'm a new owner of a 1992 XT225 purchased on eBay. As a teenager I used to ride in the deserts of southern Cal with my dad, but it's been 25+ years since I've owned a bike. I sure like this little guy! So does my wife, to the point where she's calling it "her" bike.

We live in upper Michigan, in an area laced with trails, so a dual sport bike is perfect for around here.

Wife Laura is already saying we need another, and of course she's right. Probably not this year, but next spring.

The bike is a '92 with 6200 miles. Runs like a top, and seems to have been well taken care of.

Two things have me wondering; I guess I should post in the "problems" area, but as long as I'm here: How hot should the side covers get after 20-30 minutes of trail riding? Too hot to touch?

Also, a couple of times the clutch has "dragged" or not released, to the point of stalling the engine at stops. It has happened both before and after an oil change. The clutch freeplay seems to be within specs, and it starts to engage when the lever is around halfway out. In other words, it feels pretty normal other than the couple times it's hung up. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Dave

Hey Dave,
welcome to the forum.
Are you talking about the side cover of the engine itself ? if so, yes it is normal to be too hot to touch, especially during those hot summer days.
As for your clutch, what kind of oil do you use
when you changed it ? Anyway I'm sure somebody after me will be better to answer this clutch problem.

Bye,
Jon

I used Yamalube 20-40 ($4.00/qt, ouch!).

Yeah, I was referring to the side covers of the crankcase. So I guess mine is OK.

Thanks all.

Cheers,
Dave

Hi Dave,

Welcome to the group and congrats
on your purchase. If the bike sat for
a long time without being ran there is
a possibility that the clutch plates
collected a bit of 'varnish'. Try running
the bike up against a tree or building
and let the clutch lever out a few times
until the rear wheel spins a bit. This will
help burnish and clean debris from the clutch plates.

Cheers to All

At $4.00/qt, that is an Ouch!! You can buy it thru Rocky Mountain ATV/MC and get it for $2.29/qt or get the value pack and pay $13.29 for 6 pack or $25.99 for a 12 pack....

Here is a link....And the part # is 01-4S
