Yesterday we rode 64 miles in the Pryor Mountains in Montana. It was our first-of-the-season ride in these alpine areas since there was a lot of late snow this year.

The big thrill was seeing a large herd of wild horses up close and personal. They were grazing in a picnic area by the big ice cave where we had ridden to eat a lunch. After we stopped the bikes they became curious and some of the mares edged to within 15 feet to examine our strange iron horses. The stallion stayed aloof and a little nervous of our proximity to his harem.

Horses are notorious for chewing on things and we were concerned that they would start chewing on our seats or other soft 'n' salty bike parts. We had to keep an eye on them until they finally were lured off by the stud-boss.

Trees had fallen over our pathway in a few places and we had to negotiate around the obstacles. Mud puddles and snow banks added to the adventure.

Alas, it was one of the few times I didn't take my camera. We have ridden this route quite a number of times and I didn't anticipate anything unusual. Now I am kicking myself. We may never see the wild horses again. They range over a very wide area in the Pryor Mountains. All total there were about 15 horses including a couple of colts.

It was clear skies and temps in the high 60s. Great day!

Hi Tracy,

Scraping up horsepower any way we can 'eh?

I like horses. Very noble athletic creatures. We brought on a retired thoroughbred about a year ago for my daughter. His name is Joe and he's a big sweet thing, well-mannered, beautiful and kind. I think of him as a big dog. He even knows his name.

Good to see you're out pounding the paths. Don't forget that camera!

Brs,

Don V.
