Hit the mud today, headed off to Chester this morning to the shop i bought it from so they could look at the clutch, and they recon its a stretched clutch cable, went via 'A roads' mainly and avoided motorways most of the way(about 70 mile),then on the way back i called into Reggies place of work half way home for a hot drink and some warm food, had an hours rest there, then came closer to home and found some (REALLY MUDDY) trails, near where i live, only about 5 miles of it though,at the begining i was tip toeing through,i havn't been through deep mud yet on this bike,in places it was 8-10 inches deep, but the serow lapped it up,the tires performed excellent, then i followed the track ,an old disused railway line (rail now removed) that seemed to be a collecting point for mud, water, fallen trees, horsecrap, wet slippery leaves, basically great for trail riding.

Then came the harder bit,i had to climb and descend some really slippery embankments, there was steps there but some of them were 10" high, and they were made from a slippery looking wooden frame so i prefered to ride just up the side of it.

Got up the first one in 1st gear, easy enough but started wheelspinning at the crest and had to paddle my feet abit, then got over the crest and splosh, got the back wheel bogged down to the swinging arm,so had to get off and drag it out (thank god these bikes are not heavy),20 yards later got stuck again, back wheel just wouldnt grip,i should have gone a bit faster and kept up the momentum? Anyway got through it by paddling my feet again, then it was dry for a mile, and up another embankment,2nd gear this time,i was a bit more confident after conquering the deep mud so went faster and it worked a treat. No probs this time.

Then had to descend the other side,45 degree slope of mud and wet leaves, dead tree branches, etc so i went really slow, then before i knew it,i had the front and back wheels locked up and i was still moving, oh crap, i was trying to steer through the trees and i could feel the front wheel defying my intention to go right,it wanted to go left !!! then that was it i had to bail off

I had to bail off ,sorry no photos,my adrenaline made me pull the clutch and pull it up straight away,i got it up but was still fighting it for who was gonna choose which way we went, and i was walking by the side of it at this point.
I eventually got to the bottom to find a hard dry dirt path !!!
So i made a quick inspection of the bike and it was fine,i felt euphoric cos i didnt think id get through this track with so little trouble,i rode the last half a mile home with a big smile under my helmet, 183 miles when i got home. (correction,183 KM,not MILES)

I have taken a few photos, but only of the dirty bike when i got home.

steveyb......Nice little report. Glad to hear you and your Serow are ok. Sounds like you had fun doing it, and nothing major happened. Is that an E46 3 Series I see in front of the Serow?....

Steveyb - Thanks for the ride report. I always like to hear about how others ride their bikes. These little bikes are capable of a lot of tough riding. I don't regret selecting this bike one bit.

Go relax, you've earned it.

Well spotted,it is,its mine. On the drive in the background is my friends 1984 Audi Quattro Turbo, its one of the 4wd ones with the big wheel arches from factory, its a beast of a car.He bought it at the end of last summer, hes got the suspension off it at the moment, replacing all the bearings and ball joints then hes gonna do some restoration work on the body.

Great story and good to see another XT in her native state covered in mud.
Looks like you need to get some more miles to get rid of those nasty rubber lugs you get on new tyres. My new front tyre still has them on it and the only way to fix em is to go bush.

cheers

Hi, Walls, yes i was thinking about the rubber lugs, they need removing !!!

Reggie, first i went from ringly/presto lee (down stoneclough)near giants seat camp site, along the old railway to the footbridge over the M62,over the footbridge is called the 13 arches, near chloride and pilkingtons tiles (factories),but i didnt go across the bridge. Then afterwards i went from the bottom of stoneclough brew, behind entune garage (where they restore MG's and MGB cars) up through the country park along side the river Irwell, back into Farnworth,it comes out on a path really close to my house. Oh and the fall wasnt too spectacular,it was half fall, half bail off !!

I was up your way after work tonight so i went up to the quarry there but some councill spoilsports have put a sign up saying no motorcycles , so i came back.

Mornin' Stevey,

are the routes that you road legal rights of way? If so I'll have to give them a go myself.
