Just purchased a 2000 XT225.

What petrol suits it E5 or E10?

Welcome to the site!
It is my opinion that the less ethanol in the gas the better. If ethanol laced gas sets in the carb for too long [like over winter] it turns into green jelly, and clogs the jets.

Welcome! Given the option E0 is the best choice.

Welcome. IMO, the least amount of ethanol you can get is better. E10 is all I can get, and the bike runs ok on it, but I have had and will continue to have fuel system damage caused by ethanol. Ethanol is BAD stuff. It is very corrosive to metal, and it melts rubber and plastic parts. I've had it melt the vent hose that goes on the gas cap on my aftermarket tank, fuel line, rubber parts in the petcock, the rubber gasket between the petcock and tank, the coasting enricher diaphragm, and the float needle valve tip. I've also found corrosion in the float bowl. I no longer leave ethanol gas in the bike for more than 3 weeks to a month at the time. I will either completely drain the tank and carb and put in new gas if I plan to ride the bike soon, or if it is going to sit for a while, I remove the tank and pour out ALL the gas, drain the carb, and put in a gallon of TruFuel, so I can still start up the bike when I want to. TrueFuel contains no ethanol, and has a 2 year lifespan. It's way too expensive to use for riding, but makes an excellent storage fuel.

The above is my opinion. Your mileage may vary.

Here's Yamaha(UK)'s view: E10 Fuel.

Summary = E10 is generally fine for post-1990 bikes but take care with low-use / storage.

I generally just use BP Ultimate in motorbikes anyway. The cost difference is about 10% - that's not very significant with the economy of bikes and the mileages I do.
