Glad I read this thread. Now I know how Yamaha filtered the fuel. My petcock assembly had neither of those screens still in place. Thanks!

ANYTHING is possible with a used bike. You can use an inline filter to keep dirt out of the carburetor, but that won't keep the petcock from getting plugged up. Unfortunately those inside the tank filters are not available separately, they are part of the petcock. They are not just filter screens, they are also what give you a reserve.
The above is my opinion. Your mileage may vary. 1994/2001 custom built XT225 with a ton of aftermarket parts.
