The US military has been hit by a hacking attack made possible by a Microsoft vulnerability that gave backdoor access to tens of thousands of Microsoft Exchange servers, a massive attack that Microsoft in turn has now blamed on China.

Yesterday Pentagon press secretary John Kirby told reporters; “We are aware of the Microsoft threat intelligence center’s report. We are currently assessing our networks right now for any evidence of impact. We’re also taking all necessary steps to identify and remedy any possible issues related to the situation. ...Joint Force headquarters… is coordinating with the National Security Agency and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency on guidance and directives to make sure we can protect DoD networks and IT systems (going forward)”

Microsoft announced the massive cyber breach on its Exchange email platform earlier this week, noting that a vulnerability in its servers had given “long-term access” to hackers... While the company has since released patches to plug the vulnerability, White House press secretary Jen Psaki warned on Friday that future attacks remain an “active threat.”

This is a significant vulnerability that could have far-reaching impacts. First and foremost, this is an active threat,” Psaki said at a daily press briefing. “We are concerned there are a large number of victims and we are working with our partners to understand the scope of this.

US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan warned in a tweet of “potential compromises” not only for American think tanks and other orgs, but for “defense industrial base entities,” though he declined to offer details.

Cybersecurity analyst Brian Krebs estimated the breach has impacted upwards of 30,000 organizations across the US, including “a significant number of small businesses, towns, cities and local governments.” He also said the black-hat group may have infiltrated “hundreds of thousands” of Microsoft Exchange servers worldwide, citing two anonymous hacking experts who briefed US national security officials on the attack.

A Thursday blog post by FireEye said, “US-based retailers, local governments, a university, and an engineering firm” were also swept up in the hack. FireEye is also warning Americans that they’ll be targeted by the next big cyber attack, whether they realize it or not.

FireEye CEO Kevin Mandia told Axios on HBO last Sunday that disrupted supply chains and the chaos of cellular and internet networks crashing will become reality. “The next conflict where the gloves come off (will be) in cyber, and American citizens will be dragged into it, whether they want to be or not. Period. ...People don’t even know all the things they depend on. All of a sudden the supply chain starts getting disrupted because computers don’t work,” he explained in describing a rapid, uncontrollable descent into chaos once this takes place, which he warns in no uncertain terms it will given the current state of affairs..

We've done the same BS to other countries for years, they're just playing the same game. You play you pay. Think of the attacks USA and Israel did to Iran's nuke program as an example. Most stuff we do you never get wind of. USA has had 222 military interventions/wars in it's history and has only been attacked twice. We need to mind our own business. I'm not a liberal by the way.

If it weren't a bunch of war hungry politicians and their military, industrial, big-tech clients and camp-followers pushing their nation's foreign policy towards what they see as necessary but lucrative conflict on the international stage, at the expense of the common people of the world who just try their best to 'get along', we'd have a much different world to live in..

No one seems capable of breaking this cycle of death and destruction. Profit and power rules the day. Little wonder that people still turn to mythic 'gods' and 'goddesses' of every sort for hopeful solutions to what they see as 'unsolvable problems' like these.

Governments fail them. 'Leaders' appear deaf to appeals to reason, taking what isn't theirs, forcing their political, military and economic 'will' on the powerless. Rigged systems of control are in place, often wielded in brutally demanding ways. Justice remains blind, deaf and dumb.

Will we ever escape this 'hamster wheel' ride to oblivion the world seems hell bent on continuing towards?
