When we look at the chances of death from the virus against the population of the country it doesn't look as scary as the death rate against those that catch the bug. eg Mexico 0.8% of the population have/had the bug, but 1 in 10 of those who caught it, have then died from it. Using WHO figures. That figure should vary so much from one country to another in the civilised world is concerning.

Take care not to catch it eh folks.

Could be if comparing 1st world to 3rd world countries, but UK to Germany? We're told our NHS is the tops yet we have such a high death rate from this virus.

I'm not aware of the hospital situation in US, wouldn't NY have better & more facilities than out in the sticks? Or is the problem they're overloaded.
What happens to the people of the US without health insurance who catch this virus?

That's why I left quality of care out. I'd presume quality of care is close enough to be a non factor across most all 1st world countries, so the reason for the significant difference must be something else.

NY likely does have more/better facilities, but I would guess that per capita, being in a more rural area is better. There's nearly 3x more people in NYC than the entire state of TN. Overwhelming the medical system has always been the big fear. Italy demonstrated that for all to see.

People here without insurance receive nearly identical care as those with insurance, assuming they seek treatment. Those of us with insurance and the government subsidize care costs for those without.

Just heard on the news that the UK has purchased 2million doses of the Moderna vaccine from US. Was this surplus to requirements over there? Or are we to be guinea pigs. Ha laugh

We're all guinea pigs one way or the other, Paul. No idea what vaccine distribution will look like here. No one has heard a thing as far as I know as to when and where the vaccine that's finally settled on will be available. In the meantime we keep on keepin' on, doing what we can with masks and hand washing to avoid infection. For the most part that works, but when it doesn't things can go south in a hurry..

Last I heard for the US, us worker bees are looking at April time frame. Health care and emergency workers will be vaccinated first. Those at high risk too. I'd prefer to stand down for a while until we know a bit more about side effects and effectiveness. I've never taken a flu vaccine of any kind. This go around might be different.

Our area here is fairly clean so far. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

As for vaccine effectiveness that's a real head psych. You get vaccinated but then wonder if you're that 10->38% of those it doesn't work on. So I guess the vaccine doesn't provide complete protection and never will. It just reduces the host population for the virus by an amount yet to be determined. Stay well!

Read today that by year's end some 40 million doses of vaccine will supposedly be available in the US. Out of a population of, what?..some 330+ million people, 40 million doses of vaccine by years end doesn't make much of a dent. It'll be a 'start', and we'll move forward from there, but a long way to go to fully immunize the nation..

My wife and I are participants in the phase 3 Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID vaccine study. We decided to volunteer because we are both healthy and thought we could help. A bonus is we are potentially receiving early access to the vaccine. As part of the study 1 out of every 3 study participants receives a placebo. It is a double blind study which means neither the study participant, nor their research doctor know if the live vaccine or placebo was received. That said, I’m also a very active blood donor, and every blood donation now comes with a COVID antibodies test. Following my last blood donation I was able to unblind myself and confirm that I now have COVID antibodies. This means I either received the live vaccine, or at some point in the past I was asymptomatic COVID positive. I highly doubt I was ever asymptomatic COVID positive and feel the vaccine is the reason I now have antibodies. For those on the fence about getting the vaccine, I can say the primary symptom you will experience is a sore arm at the injection site. The soreness is very similar to what you might feel from a flu shot. I did not experience any body aches or tiredness, which is also a common vaccine symptom. The COVID vaccines are safe/effective and will hopefully bring a swift end to this pandemic.
