To Muniac's point.... 100% gas whenever possible. Ethanol is terrible for anything with a carb.

Another odd thing I've noticed this winter... My bike has sat for weeks at a time with the continuing bad weather. I routinely do the "close the petcock" deal, only use 100% gas, and keep the bike in my garage. It's not directly heated, but rarely gets below 40F. I've noticed that when I get it out to ride after several weeks, it won't fire with the first press of the starter. It'll crank and crank and crank but won't fire. The 2nd time I press the starter, it fires almost immediately. So I push the starter and let it crank for a couple seconds, release and wait a moment, then press again and it fires right up. I have no idea why.

This only happens when it's been sitting for more than a week. I rode it late last week and it did this. I rode it this morning and it cranked a second or two longer than usual, but it fired the first time. Runs like normal once it's warmed up. The same tank of 100% gas has been in it for maybe 2 months. Strange...

Another thing that helps is a gasoline stabilizer additive. That being if you park your bike (full) and leave it for extended periods of time. We did this over the winter in Park City (-24F sometimes). Bikes went into an unheated U-Lock storage cubicle for 5-6 months. Topped both off to avoid condensation. No trickle charger either. Both bikes would start come Spring without too much cranking. Those CV carbs have a personality, not always predictable. Bad moods only once in awhile. Ride safely.

Hey all! I just wanted to post back after a summer of riding. The bike runs GREAT! Cold starts are no longer an issue at all. A few months after the carb rebuild, I adjusted the idle air bypass jet (ended up liking about 3 turns out, like everyone says), and now it really purrs when I cold start it, and let it warm up on it's own with the choke on.

I've done several tests, and the bike always seems to start within about 3 seconds when cold, and I don't need to give it any throttle. I also find no benefit in running the float bowl dry before shutting it down... this actually makes it take longer to restart. I do turn the fuel off a few seconds before shut down, but I don't run the float dry ever. (I always use a fuel stabilizer too)

I made a quick video to demonstrate. This cold start was after sitting for 2 months. It was 50deg F. outside (and in my garage). I did not run the float dry before shutting down last time.

Cold start example video:

Hey Conick! Your bike looks exactly like my '02, color scheme and all, and it cold starts just like mine as well. A little choke, a couple of blips of the starter, and she fires right up. A few seconds later, choke off and she's ready to roll!

Nice to read a post from you again. Keep 'em coming, and when you're out and about ride safely, rubber side down!
