I've used CloneZilla over the years with my USB drives. It reliably makes image backups and successfully restores your HD. The interface isn't exactly user friendly but the program works. One challenge I found is getting the correct version that boots and runs on your machine. Perhaps the linked instructions above demystifies using it.
