Hello, I'm somewhat new to riding and just bought my first dual sport about a month ago brand new. (2020 XT250)

My bike tends to speed wobble when I go +65mph (104kmh) and I'm not too sure if it's a bike problem or just the skinny knobby front tire.

I've already checked my spokes and fork and everything seems to be just fine.

Appreciate any advice/suggestions.

^ Also, I plan on ordering some 80:20 tires to see if it helps the issue.

had a similar issue on my klr650. check your race sag (suspension should compress approx. 1/3 of total travel) with you, wearing all your gear, on the bike. slightly loose steering head bearings also contributed, in my case.

main culprit for me was not enough front sag.

I haven’t thought about that, I’ll look into it. Thanks!

Tires are the typical culprit, knobbies being more prone to it than more street oriented tires. Next time it wobbles, slide up as far forward as you can and see if it changes.

Hey Brian - bring your new XT250 down to South OC and let's do some riding. Once you are in the dirt the speed wobble will most certainly go away! grin

Being a new bike do check the tire pressures. The OEM recommendation is a bit too high for the dirt. Frankly even on the road I prefer a softer tire with slightly lower pressure.

Do check preload and rebound on the rear shock. For starters go 50% rebound. It may be too soft / slow leading to some undulation at speed. Believe the 250 has a similar setup as the 225. this is from the 225 users manual

Enjoy the new bike.

There shouldn't be any issues with a brand new bike. A new bike design has been extensively tested by the manufacturer before being sold, so it is not a design problem. It is not the tire, unless the tire is defective or under inflated. If you changed the stock tire that is likely the cause. There are quite a few things that can cause a wobble. Front suspension problems, unbalanced front tire, loose steering head bearings. Did it do that from new or did it start later? If it has been dropped something is probably out of alignment.

The above is my opinion. Your mileage may vary.
