While we are on the topic of top end rebuild, has anyone done this in their 225? My cold compression is at 92psi and I can tell a significant loss of power between my bike and my cousins bike of only 1 year apart. I know it's going to need a top end I'm going on 21,000 miles. Just wanted to get suggestions as to a particular brand (aftermarket) that has shown good results. I'm thinking of going with a wiseco top end kit and buying either a whole cylinder and slapping it on, or buying just the sleeve and having a local engine machine shop install the sleeve. My last question would be just the top end, or should I also do the bottom end at this milage while I'm doing this over the winter time. I will also be replacing the clutch too at this time. Any responses will be much appreciated. Thanks!

No personal experience, but Wiseco generally makes good kits. If your top end is gone at 21k, that's a strong sign it's been used pretty hard. I'd give it a thorough inspection when you change the clutch. The bottom end is usually pretty robust. I'm not aware of anything that needs much attention as long as it hasn't run low on oil. Several of these bikes have gone over 100k miles.

I think I'll go with the wiseco top end only kit then, I haven't heard anything negative about them yet. I would say it was used fairly hard in its life, the oil was pretty deteriorated the first time I changed it. I'll look things over well when I go to replace the clutch then as well. I'll be doing this sometime in December most likely so I will give an update then. But until then I'm going to enjoy it and ride as much as possible...or until it breaks!

Mine was using oil at a rate of 1L/2k miles compression was way down. Last year I stripped the top end & measured up, the standard bore showed no wear & piston looked fine. I opted for new rings, they're cheap, the Yam gasket set is not. I honed the bore, re-assembled & ran-in for a few hundred miles.

The bike now runs fine, plenty of torque for its size & the oil usage 70ml/680miles at last change. eg approx for comparison, 1L/10k miles, so a fifth of what it was. Now at 540miles & oil level does not look to have dropped from top line.
