Does a 1987 XT225 orginal muffler have replaceable packing?

Not positive but I will say no. The newer ones have a baffle that can be removed for cleaning by removing the screw at the bottom rear of the muffler. But no fiberglass or other packing.

I recall a forum member some years ago wondering about modifying his stock muffler using what was there and adding some packing where none previously existed. Other than that every XT225 I've seen or worked on had no fiberglass packing in its muffler.

Thanks for the response. In the event that it might be packing up is there much I can do about it or do I just have to replace it?

Pull your bike's muffler apart to see first hand what you're dealing with. Then you'll know for certain..

I recently pulled mine apart, quite a bit of violence was required after 15 years of rust. I had wondered what was causing the rattle in there; the spark arrestor had rusted through and parts of it were floating around loose. There is definitely no fiberglass in there, and if you tried adding any it would just plug things up. I ended up making a new end cap, and it runs way better now than before.

Hi
That sounds a lot more promising than buying a slip on and adapting. Did you notice if the box was partitioned? I inquired from an exhaust builder, who's only seen a picture of mine in situ, who seemed to think that it was and that it would need a lot of cutting out which would not make it viable. What also seemed to concern him was the off centre end cap? Are you able to share with me how you made the end cap?
I'd be most obliged.

You can buy just the end cap... https://www.partzilla.com/product/yamaha/1RH-14752-01-00

It may not exactly fit an 87 model, I'm not sure how much they changed over the years. Might be an easier place to start.

Never seen a 1987 XT225. They didn't come to the U.S. until 1992. But from 1992 onward, the stock exhaust does not have any packing, just metal baffles. And they are prone to rusting.

The above is my opinion. Your mileage may vary.
