I already started it, sounded like it was getting oil to the top. But now that it is established that there is a bolt I may just loosen it anyway just to burp it. ( Burping your engine, I don't think I've ever heard of that before though )

The 2 rubber tits in the oil filter housing and the 2 large holes in the original OEM filter are now resolved. The rubber end of the filter that goes in first had come off of the filter and was stuck inside the housing. I had never seen an original or replacement filter before so I had no idea.

What would you guys do?...

I've owned lots of bikes before, so when I changed the oil on this new to me XT225 I didn't think about checking to make sure the filter had 4 holes, nor did I know about the oil bleed bolt.

I changed the oil and filter, and have since gone riding... easily rode it an hour or two, some at top speed, and had no issues at all.

Now I learn about the filter issue and bleed bolt and am paranoid.

My first thought is to do an oil change and check the filter for the 4 holes.

My second thought is just start the bike and check that oil is getting through and if it is then I can presume the correct filter is installed.

My third thought is that if I already rode this for well over an hour and I didn't seize it, then I must have the correct filter installed and oil must be getting to the head or I would have already done the damage.

Thoughts? (and at least now I know for next time!)

Just my opinion, but if you rode the bike for an hour without a problem there's little doubt you installed the correct filter. If I were you I'd pull the filter and double check just to make sure.

Had I been home when I wrote the above, it would have been quicker just to check than to write that.

In case anyone is wondering, with the bike leaned over about 45 degrees, no oil comes out when you open the filter cover. I was prepared for a mess, and prepared to dump the oil and start fresh, but it wasn't necessary.

My filter has the four holes, so all is good.

Tomorrow (so I don't wake the neighbours) I'll open the bleed bolt to make sure no air in the system. All is good. Thanks for the knowledge.

As documented many places here, an XT250/XT225 oil filter mix up can destroy your engine by blocking oil flow. Broken record on this is OK since it's serious business. Double, double check on the filter. As for oil in the chamber cavity, I never had lots of oil coming out when I changed the filter.

Another thing to inspect is cracks in the pleat folds. High crown bends tend to be weak areas and can open up. That pleated filter can be cleaned and reused many times. I recall Yamaha using metal micro screen in there which can be cleaned with toothbrush and diesel fuel. The rubber gasket on that filter can also get left behind when you remove it. Check that out too.

I had the gasket stick to the housing on a car once. Didn't notice and installed the new filter with 2 gaskets. Strangely, 2 gaskets was far worse than one. I had a big puddle of oil in the driveway to clean up. Dad wasn't happy, but at least it was clean oil. Then I had to figure out how to get to the parts store to get more oil with a car that didn't have much left in it. After that, I always check the old filter to be sure the gasket came with it. It's never happened again.

I'm also careful with checking gaskets on oil filters. Always do my own oil changes as there are too many mistakes that can be made with severe consequences for the owner of the vehicle. I'm referring to the oil change franchise whorehouses. All while a trained specialist destroys your car as you're in the waiting room. F that!

As for the XT225, its oil drain plug is really delicate. Special care needed to remove it and reinstall it. A nightmare if threads get damaged. I can't say I've seen many threaded parts that can get more easily crossed than the XT225 oil drain plug.
