In the manual it says from .020-.030 on a DR8 plug. NGK chart says .028, so I am going with that as the plug coming out is showing very rich, ( black ). I'm not sure yet how many turns out fuel is set at. When I brought it home had to turn idle screw up to increase the idle. So does that gap seem fine? Thanks

Keep in mind .30 is the maximum gap so at .28 you are only leaving .02 for wear.

Are you sure the black is from fuel and not oil?

I'm pretty sure as there is no moisture . Real dry and really black. I will check the new plug once I get some hours on it. I set the new gap at about .026.

Speaking of spark plugs the manual suggests a DR8EA. The dealer I bought my bike from had installed a DR8ES. The plugs are pretty much identical according to the NGK spec sheet. The only difference is the firing tip, A= special construction with the S being pretty much standard. Bike runs great, but I think I will source an EA for piece of mind. To stay on topic my plug is black if I remove it after a ride. From a throttle chop I get a dry plug that looks like new, I hate the new motor fuels.

The manual says, ( as you said ), NGK, DR8EA and so does the OEM parts chart. I just bought and put in NGK, DR8ES-L as that is the one that comes up when you cross reference the original Denso X24ESR-U. I think I'm going to take it out and go get the DR8EA as that seems to be the correct one. To add to the confusion here is a link to NGK's website cross- reference chart---And it also says NGK, DR8ES-L???

If its sparking and running fine, that's about a 9 on a scale of 1-10. smile

If your plug has black soot on it, figure out if the condition is at all throttle positions. Warm the bike up with the old plug. Shut down and install new plug. Start back up with no choke or throttle. After 10 minuets of idling shut down and check the plug. If sooty, turn in mixture screw and/or install smaller pilot jet. If plug looks good, check mid range stuff like slide, diaphragm, worn needle/needle jet, needle position.
