I bought a 2011 xt250 to replace my Cygnus scooter to put on my van when I tour and to use it to explore further.

This bike has done 3000km and was tucked away in a garage and is like new. I understand now why it was not used... It starts and runs beautifully but will suddenly cut out... Only at idle, and usually after running a while. It can stand a while and then start again. When it cuts out there is no spark whatsoever.

An auto electrician found a few earth wires had melted slightly but does not think that was the problem. Would anyone have any idea... He says he thinks the rectifier (?) is too hot and he says he will reposition. But this bike is like new... Can anyone tell me if there are similar problems around as I want to get the bike back.

Best of luck as you sort the problem out. Shouldn't be too difficult, but you never know till you dig into it..

Sounds like a heat related electrical problem and your auto electrician is headed in the right direction. The older 225 is known to have intermittent stator failures that cause no spark. I'm not sure if the 250 has the same issue.

I had a similar electrical problem recently, after much searching & cleaning of connections, mine turned out to be a corroded main fuse holder. It's been ok since I fitted a new one.
