Hi, This bike has been sitting a couple years, recently charged the battery, gave the carb a rebuild and it started right up. @ problems though- -I let it idle for about 2 mins and in that time rpms started climbing on their own slowly and I noticed that the the front 8-10" of the pipe were glowing red -When I hit the throttle, it would not return on its own, had to manually turn the grip forward to decrease rpms, when i fiddled with the throttle on the carb it did the same thing, like the spring is not working.
New to bikes in general, trying to teach myself from zero as I have no friends that ride either, if these are dumb questions forgive me please. Any advice is much appreciated!!

Single throttle cable or two? Sounds like single. If two - you have some stiction on one or both cables. Lube the cable will help.
Idle speed increasing. Do you have the choke on? If so, this is normal. The choke has detents. You can reduce the amount of choke as the bike warms up.
Beyond that it may be related to various air mixture screws. outside my area of expertise.
Plenty of others on the forum with way more expertise!

Thanks for the reply. The idle speed increase was after the choke was pushed back in, then it ran at a nice idle for a minute or so, and then started to creep up.

If the pipe is glowing red you likely are running very lean. I would check for air leaks, which would also explain the increasing idle speed.
Have motorhome and xt225 will travel!

You have a vacuum leak, the "hanging idle" is a classic symptom. Most likely source is the intake boot between the carb and cylinder. It cracks over time and has to be replaced. Other causes are the choke cover and the coasting enrichment circuit cover on either side of the carb.
The header glowing red can be an indication of lean mixture and vacuum leak. But... the header glowing red is also normal, depending on the conditions. The exhaust gets very hot when the bike is stationary running at a high idle with no air movement (in a garage or no breeze). Keep in mind the exhaust gas exiting the engine can be 1500F or more. If it was dark-ish, cloudy, or in a poorly lit garage, and no air flow to cool it, seeing the header turn red is normal.
This shall pass, be still and know. 2006 XT225, UNI filter, ProTaper bars, MSR handguards, SS front brake line, Shinko 241's.
