Spokes were another weak area. They would routinely wear the hub at the shoulder and break creating adjustment problems.....

Found the XT250 I owned in the Valley to be better built in the areas you mentioned as compared to the XT225s I've had. I also find the CRF230L I now ride to be better built in those areas as well - rear disc brake from the factory, stronger wheels, better spokes. Probably one of the reasons the CRF230L weighs in a bit heavier than the XT225 out the door, that plus all the California smog equipment it comes with as well as the beefy exceptionally quiet factory exhaust system.

Replaced a couple of spokes on the first XT I had up here, not an easy or inexpensive task by the way. I also took all the Cal mandated smog stuff off my CRF230L, which lightened it a lot. Might one day replace the Honda factory exhaust with a lighter performance exhaust system, but no rush to do that just yet.

Main thing to note is that whatever bike you ride there's always things to consider. Not one of them will be perfectly suited for the way we'll use them out of the box. Some are closer than others, but they all come with trade offs you'll be tempted to do something about as time goes by.

I wouldn't let the age be a worry, my 225 is a '95 with 17,500 miles recorded, likely done many more. It's needed a bit of work but that's all about getting to know it. I bought it 6 years ago & put the last 6,000 miles on it. At the moment it wants for nothing but riding, trouble is, 'tis freezing out there & I've gotten soft in me old age.

The old girl aint looking too shabby for its age & mileage.

I'm with Paul on this. I bought a mid-90s XT225 with close to 7000 miles on it in Flagstaff about three years ago at a super low price. After changing out the carburetor intake manifold and servicing it that bike ran like a champ, as well as any XT225 I've ever owned. Ended up trading it to a carpenter who did some work for me as payment for his labor, and he enjoys riding it to this day.
