Microsoft's updates and support for Windows 7 ends on January 14, 2020. Windows 7 was released July 22, 2009. It’s over a decade old at this point, but still incredibly popular. Outfits that track system usage say that Windows 7 is still being used by almost a third of all Windows PCs.

With updates and support for Windows 7 ending in January, Microsoft is busy sending upgrade notices to users still running it. Reminding users they should prepare to move on from Windows 7, a message titled ‘Support for Windows 7 is coming to end’ provides the following details:

“Please note that after January 14, 2020, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical support for Windows 7. We recommend backing up your files to ease the transition,” the message reads. A link in the message opens Microsoft’s Windows 7 page, which provides various reasons users should make the move to Windows 10.

Windows 7 diehards who relent and make the move will find themselves in an entirely different world with Windows 10 - nothing at all like they've been used to with Windows 7 for the past decade or more.

Those who refuse and decide to 'wing it' on their own will face all sorts of issues as time goes by and Windows 7 falls further and further out of date.

Not sure what I'd do if I were in the Windows 7 boat. The only instance of Windows 7 I run is a bare minimum installation in a Virtualbox on my Linux Mint machine. Other than that, which handles a couple of graphic programs I use, I have no use for Windows. It'll be interesting to see the long term results of Microsoft's final pulling of this critical update and support plug.

If you're someone who will be impacted by this, let us know what your plans are as January 14th approaches.

..I'd rather have questions I can't answer, than answers I can't question.. Dr. Phil

That's technology for you. I have Windows 2000 and XP running on a couple of machines in the shop. None of them are connected to the internet. They all run fine less the new features, of course. Things I don't need anyway. I have a Windows 10 PC running a development application. That has crashed numerous times now and complains about the disk not being bootable. It also complains about my flash drives (FAT32) I use without problems on Linux. So far the Windows 10 machine has come back after I reboot it.

In fairness, I've had my Linux systems lockup with the screen saver and hibernation requiring a power down and cold start. This happens infrequently and randomly. I've changed the screen saver to just dimming the display and I haven't had any issues.

As for software, expect there to be constant changes to include loss of support. Goes with the territory.
