I'm not sure if this is a normal issue but I'm having an odd intermitent stalling when attempting to
walk my bike backward into a parking space.

It also sometimes happens with tight turn forward motion preceding the backwards motion, and I have to blip the throttle a bit to prevent a stall (which I'm often not quick enough to catch).

I can prevent the stall if I give it some gas before it actually stalls, but it seems kind of odd that I idle fine walking my bike forward, its just when trying to back it up that it happens?

Has anyone run into this? The only things that I can think of are:
  • Float Height
  • Clutch/Choke - both don't seem overly tightly routed
  • Idle not set correct - Not sure how to tune this to an actual rpm value... just going by ear it seems ok. I don't want to set the idel too high either...

I would try adjusting the idle a minimal amount. Even if you were to accidently go a tad high out of spec, it wouldn't cause any issues.

The bike has a wet disc pack clutch which has inherent drag. You can see that by the noticeable knock when going into first gear from a standstill. I would be interested in exploring your backwards move in neutral, clutch pulled in, etc. Just to see if any of these combinations make a difference. If the clutch is dragging (slightly) it might be just enough to overcome the engine's available torque at idle. Resulting in a stall. Going backward would pull against the engine's rotation.

I too thought about fuel moving in the bowl when back peddling. That would mean a very low fuel height. Causing a brief loss of fuel. But that would produce other symptoms which aren't present. Good luck.

Try it in neutral. If it doesn't stall, could need a slight clutch or idle adjustment. If it runs fine otherwise, I'd say the carb is fine.

Is this in gear with the clutch held in? If so, it's likely as muniac says & logical.

I've found some oils cause more clutch drag than others, eg Morris f/s m/c oil was bad, Silkolene semi less so. You likely use different oils over the pond. I would use the Mobil 1 that muniac uses, not stocked locally here.

I've always used Mobil I 15W-50 with good results. The clutch slipping when using synthetic oil is a myth. I have noticed it wicking through O-rings, gaskets and seals more than dyno grade oils.

Is that the bike specific oil, or the general car oil?

It's just the general non-specific oil. Comes in a light grey quart container marked "Advanced Full Synthetic". I think it's a good lubricant which I change out every 500 miles. I also use Mobil I synthetic grease (red color).

Thanks muniac, I'll do a google search again, see if I can get it, maybe posted. I got the same grease, good stuff.

I'd be surprised if Mobil I isn't offered internationally. I like synthetic oils and grease. Amsoil is also a good choice if Mobil I isn't available.
