Hi
I'd appreciate your advice with my 2008 XT250 (DG11J). I'd ridden back home with no issues and turned off at the key. Went to restart a few seconds later to move her and heard a clunk on thumbing the start switch then nothing. No instrument panel illuminating, no clicks, no firing, absolutely dead. We've pulled and checked the main 20amp fuse and it's fine. The battery is showing 12.9V on a multimeter. I'm assuming that there is a loose connection between the ignition and battery, but am struggling to access the back of the ignition switch.

I've found a service manual for the XT250X / XC but it doesn’t quite marry up with my XT and it doesn’t show how to access the back / wiring connector of the ignition? I've undone the bolts on the headlight cowl and pulled it forward but this doesn't give the access needed.

Suggestions as to what to check next and photos would be really appeciated. I'm in the UK. I'm feeling gutted as this is my daily ride.

Many thanks!

Check to see if the ground wire came loose.

Hi Peejman

Many thanks for your suggestion. I'm not with the bike at the mo.

Excuse the dumb question but where should I be looking for the ground wire?

US circuit diagram suggests it runs down left side of bike up to frame behind rectifier? Is this the same for a Japanese version?

Many thanks, Avril

Check your battery again with a load on it. I have had batteries that read good with a multimeter but with a load drop to 0 volts.

Don't really know about Japan vs. other versions... just follow the negative battery cable.

Thanks guys. Seems that it was a failed battery after all. Rechecked the voltage with ignition key to 'on' and multimeter reading dropped to 0.6V from 12.5V when in 'off' position. Really surprised that it died so suddenly as it had given no sign of failing and thankfully it got me home before it croaked.

Connected up to car battery from jump cables and everything lit up and she fired first time. Just wish I'd done that first but the battery tender test/charge also seemed to support an ok battery.

Really pleased that it's an easy fix.

Any recommendations for a good replacement and with negative terminal on the right when viewed from front - Yuasa AGM or a Li-ion? Dead one is a MF CTZ7S.

Many thanks again for the advice!

Battery cells can die very quickly. Your 12.6V battery is 6 series connected 2.1V cells. Anyone of which will kill the battery if it fails. The bus bars connecting the cells can fail too.

I always use Yuasa AGM batteries and have had good luck with them. Be careful when buying online to make sure you get a Yuasa battery. Some deceptive ads out there.

As for AGM batteries, Odyssey makes the best ones. Not sure if they offer a model for the XT. They make a lot of batteries for power sports. Good luck!
