Upgraded turn signals to LED daytime white(front), red(back), H4 LED headlight. All cluster lights have been changed white LED.
Changed out the mirrors for more modern looking sharper mirrors.
Also new battery, stator, spark plug, air filter, oil filter, oil, ignition coil, rectifier, all new jets in the carb, new starter relay. This bike did not work at all in january when i was gifted it. Finally got this thing ready for the summer as my commuter. Super excited about all the upgrades so far and cant wait for more.

Looks great. So they are daytime clear and amber, but do they flash a separate amber section or does it flash the same section that is daytime?

Theyre white daytime but flash amber in the center when you activate the turn signal. Same with the rear but red on the outside, amber on the inside.

Why didn't you use LEDs that are white everywhere? Isn't the lens enough to give the appropriate color, as it does with incandescents? Red outside and amber inside sounds like there's going to be a conflict. Did the flash rate change and, if so, how did you deal with it?

As an aside, I'm investigating using LED's on my 95's turn signals and tail lights. As best I can tell there's a problem with converting a '95 or earlier because of how the dash turn indicator is wired (I think the indicator is wired differently on '96 and up). On mine the indicator is wired so that its ground connection is through the bulbs. If the left signal is on, the indicator bulb is grounded though the right bulbs. Similarly if the right signal is on, the indicator bulb is grounded though the left bulbs. The indicator draws so little current that the resistance of the bulb doesn't matter. But it will matter if all bulbs are LEDs. I think the solution is to only change the 1157 bulbs to LEDs and rely on the 1156 bulbs for the ground connection. The 1156's only come on when flashing whereas the 1157's have an 8 W filament that's always on as a running light and a 27 W that does the flashing. As a result, if all bulbs are changed to LED's, the indicator probably either work at all or will be much dimmer with the possibility that the opposite side flashers will also dimly flash. I don't think that load resistors will solve this and, even if they did, they would defeat a major reason for the LEDs.

'95 and earlier use a 3 wire flasher versus 2 wire for '96 up. But the later flasher is listed as a substitute for the earlier (both use the same electrical connector). There may be a flash rate issue with LEDs in the earlier years. My standard flash rate is about .7 seconds/flash (1.4 flashes/sec). But it changes to .3 seconds/flash (3.3 flashes/sec) when one bulb is out. The legal rate is 1 to 2 flashes/second. The later flasher might solve this but that's why I asked the flash rate question in the beginning.

this project looks great!

does anyone know what bulb type is used for the speedometer and dash lights? i am organizing an LED-conversion project, but am unable to find the bulb-type specifications in the factory manual or other threads discussing LED bulbs.

thanks!

The service manual just says 12V, 3.4W with a picture that looks like this...

thanks, peejman. i did not see a picture like that in my manual, i must have not checked the correct section.

what i am looking for specifically is the type of socket that the bulb has, so that i can install LED lights. i am unable to tell what type of socket they are.

i checked procycle, and the only LED bulb i could find (other than headlights or turn signals) was the 1157 type bulb for the brake light.

some cursory internet searching leads me to believe that something like a "t10 wedge LED" bulb might work. does anyone have experience with these?

i am not set on replacing my dash lights, i am just exploring how many watts i can scrounge up with various LED conversions so that i can then budget for heated gear or gps.

the bulb looks like this (from an amazon listing):
