The Pew Research Center in Washington DC has found that Scientists rank at the top of a survey of "trusted professions". Adults in the U.S. are confident that scientists can be trusted to act in the public's best interests far more than other professionals.

This recent survey found that confidence in science and scientists has risen dramatically since 2016, with more than half of American adults believing that specialists in their fields should be actively involved in policy decisions surrounding scientific matters.

Today 86% of U.S. adults express, at a minimum, a "fair amount" of confidence that scientists put the public interest first in their work. This recently revealed 'trust rating' puts scientists far above politicians, the military, business leaders, school principals, religious leaders and journalists among others.

Since 2016 trust in non-scientific professions has remained largely stable. School principals enjoy a 77% trust rating, religious leaders quite some distance down the scale at 57%, journalists 47%, business leaders 46%, and lastly politicians at a mere 35% - none of which should surprise anyone who stays even somewhat abreast of what's going on these days.

I'm surprised politicians made it to the double digits.
I wonder where MC mechanics/dealerships fall.

I find that quite surprising given the stark differences in opinion on wide variety of science related topics (climate, renewable energy, medicine, etc.) Science isn't immune to corruption. Follow the money.

Good question. Experience teaches that dealerships and the mechanics they employ are a mixed bag. Overall, across the board, it depends on the outfit and individuals you're dealing with. Like any other profession and the 'professionals' who make their living there, you'll find skilled conscientious people as well as a large number who prove to be essentially worthless, leaving customers holding the bag if they don't scope them out and avoid them to begin with.

The scientific method diligently pursued and the results it provides is the tool. The way that tool is sometimes used is, as you note, not immune to corruption when powerful special interests, politically and financially motivated, sway things to their particular viewpoint ignoring every data point that indicates just the opposite is true..
