We just replaced the rear brakes on 1993 xt225, now the brake doesnít even work. We took it off twice and tried putting it on different ways, and when pressure is applied it doesnít work. The piece inside the brake thatís supposed to turn just stays flat. The spring is tightened as much as possible, we just donít understand

As I recall, there's a cam in there which pushes the top of the shoes outward toward the drum. It's a very simple mechanism. A rod (from the cam) comes through the drum backing plate where there is a lever attached. This is pulled via a rod when pressing on the brake pedal causing the cam to rotate slightly. As for the drum, it's a cast iron sleeve pressed into the hub.

Is the drum sleeve worn excessively?
Did the rear brake work before you took it apart?
Does the lever rotate and move the cam?
Are the lobes on the cam worn off (or down)?
Did you reinstall the drum backing plate properly?

As Muniac says, it's a pretty simple mechanism. The splined shaft moves a lever that pushes the pads out against the drum. If that's working like it should, perhaps it's so far out of adjustment that the pads aren't touching the drum.

I assume this means that you removed the wheel, and examined the new brake shoes. Are you sure they were the correct parts? Can you elaborate on "The piece inside the brake thatís supposed to turn just stays flat"? A photo would help.



While the wheel is off, you should be able to move the brake lever by hand to see if the cam pivots and the shoes move. Other than wrong parts or mis-assembly, there isn't much that can go wrong with a rod-operated drum brake, a technology that goes back to the stone age of motorized vehicles.
