We've had a hell of a winter season. We made a 4WD run up to Hurricane Pass (12.7k feet elevation) yesterday. Haven't been up there in 2 years. 4 dirt bikes passed us coming down off the passes up there. Roads are in pretty good shape considering snow levels.

Thought a few folks might enjoy seeing the snow levels.

Interesting photo. Is this snow stacked up from snow blowers and plows moving it off the road, or is that the actual depth of snow these high elevations received?

There is actually a lot less snow shown in the photo given weeks of melting. Wind can transport HUGE amounts of snow into deep pockets. Avalanches also transport HUGE amounts of snow. I would imagine the bulldozer operators have a GPS track of the road since it would be impossible to find otherwise. They drive over the snow and cut a swath as deep as possible which isn't at full depth. Repeated passes go deeper each time until they hit the ground. It's grueling work and takes a long time. On bench cut roads it's also very dangerous.

Rotary snow blowers are used in some sections. Clearing avalanche debris is tricky since it's mixed with trees and rocks. I spoke to one of the snow blower operators and he said he was on his 46th shear pin trying to clear a couple hundred feet of snow debris. It costs about $125k to clear 1 mile of road.

The scallops you see on the side walls are created from melting snow. That snow is like concrete now.
