Wow, 75 is warp speed! I can reach about 55 (GPS), though I don't want to fiddle with it because it has enormous grunt, I think it would climb trees if the tyres were better.
I'll dig out and put the pictures up of me testing the float height, wont be until sunday or so though.

I believe the "75 MPH" is indicated, not GPS measured. Most likely very high 60's, with the 14T.

Running the bike with the petcock off will test whether the petcock leaks, but I wouldn't rely upon it as a test of anything else. As the fuel depletes in the float bowl, the engine will momentarily rise in RPM, as it is momentarily running lean; this won't last very long, before it stalls and stops.

We all do that. But the Xt225 seems to test out under normal conditions (level road/ no wind) at about 73-74 MPH with stock gearing (which probably shows 80+ MPH on the speedometer). I think with the 14T, you'd max out a bit slower.

I can say with a 16T front sprocket I have reached 75mph indicated on gps. I never checked on gps when I had stock gearing.

I ran a 14t for a while and I think it went faster than with the stock 15t. Especially in hilly area's.

There's no doubt that under CERTAIN conditions, a 14T might have a top speed greater than the stock 15T, such as a wind against you, or a slight uphill grade (or both).

The XT225 doesn't have an RPM limiter, so there is also a question as to how high we want to let the little guy buzz and scream.

Some (road-oriented) bikes with a high 6th speed gear are very well known to go faster in level, no-wind conditions with one tooth less on the counter-shaft. I would guess most.

As example, my FZ1 is rated with stock gearing (no Mods) at about 153; repeatedly people have tested them at 155 with one tooth less counter-shaft. (Modded, they hit the rev-limiter at 165, with one tooth less)

As a further example of gearing, Camaros and Firebirds with 6-speed manual transmissions have a higher top speed in 5th gear, than 6th.

Heres my check of the fuel level - just a piece of pipe attached to the drain plug and curled round. The manual states it should be 11-12mm below the mating surface, mine here is almost level

And here is the reason - the float height measured at 12.5mm instead of 14.1-15.1mm

I modified the float height, it made a difference to the running as previously mentioned, though subsequent checks show the fuel level appears not to have altered enough, so I may revisit the adjustment another time

Excellent pictures and write-up. Your example with your bike clearly shows why the float height measurement (generally) is superior to fluid height observations, with an external tube.

In theory, the fluid height method should be superior...but it just isn't, because there are other varying factors.

Redline on Yamaha XT225 is about 9000 rpm.. Peak horsepower is at 8000 rpm..
When your're riding your XT225 chasing after KLR650s and KTM950s.. In example
5th gear at 90 kph.. Drop down to 4th gear and pin the throttle and accelerate..
And you then suddenly feel a lose in power (very noticeable).. That is how high
you can let the little guy buzz and scream..

First time I hit peak horsepower and then beyond.. I thought what the #$%^&*..
I was accelerating going faster.. Hit this peak and my XT225 started decelerating
I thought I blew my engine.. But luckily I didn't.. I just hit the point where more
rpm gives less power (see below)..
