So my 92 XT 225 has some plastics that are scratched and some pieces even cracked. Also, the last owner tried a spray bomb paint job on it and it looks terrible...not that the original design was much better. I was thinking of finding good paint but it seems like even the stuff made for platic isnt all that great, espcially for scratch resistance.

I was at the local sportsman show over the weekend and discovered what seems to be the perfect solution to my problem. It's from Line-X (the bedliner company) and they offer a product called Body Armour. It's made to cover sections of any vehicle wanting extra protection or entire vehicles from front to back. It also comes in a wide range or colors and can be matched to any stock automobile paint.

This stuff seems to be as tough as their bedliner, plus it sticks to anything (including plastic), is flexible, dries in seconds and adds a lot of strength as well. They have videos showing people covering random objects with this stuff and dropping off the roof of a 2 storey building to see if the item will break. An egg and a watermelon both bounced off the ground and stayed completely intact without a scratch.

I think this stuff is the real deal. I think it's the solution I am looking for to make by XT better looking and also more durable to the abuse it tends to receive by branches, rocks, and my lack of riding ability. I will try this stuff out and let you guys know how good it is

I went to my local Line-X dealer today in order to price out what it would cost to get the bike done in black. Although the stuff is amaizing, I decided against spending 180$ CAD for a nice finish on a bike I only paid 400$ for.

Thankfully, the man behind the desk in good nature told me what he would do for a nice paint job on motorcycle plastics. He said he would sand off the existing paint using 200 than 400 grit for a smooth finish and clean with mineral spirits. He would then use Duplicolor adhesion promoter primer before adding whatever color duplicolor paint I wanted. Although it sounds fishy to use something that can be found at the local Canadian Tire, he assured me he has used it himself on many plastic automotive parts before like fender flares and bumpers and it actually did a fantastic job. He said it would actually look much nicer than Line-X, what his own company offers.

We will see what happens....until then, does anyone have suggestions or experience in a similar situation?

So as I said before I used the duplicolor adhesion promoter as a primer before putting on my chosen product. Since the Line-X was going to be much too expensive but I was really looking forward to the look it gave, I went with the next best cheap option: Duplicolor bed armour.

I used the spray can stuff not knowing that the roll on version existed. Although the finished product actually did turn out quite nice, I will admit that it is NOT the easiest stuff to spray on. It doesn't work like regular spray paint. You must wipe off the spray tip often as the thick texture of the product accumulates quickly and then starts shooting "globs" which create drips. This makes it sound bad, but if you follow the instructions on the can, keep it slightly further from the surface than normal spray paint, shake and wipe off often, it actually makes a good hard textured finish. The roll on stuff might be easier to work with. It dries to touch pretty fast but takes VERY long to cure to a hard finish. It was initially kind of a rubbery surface, but eventually become hard after about 3 days.

Sounds like an interesting product. Thanks for detailing how you went about prepping and spraying it on. That may work on a project I have in mind for when warmer weather arrives.

I saw a KLR painted completely with the Linex product. It was tough, but overall I believe it also added a significant amount of weight to the machine. I mean significant. fwiw.

Line-X is a good tough product able to be sprayed on plastic, wood, metal, etc. It is heavy depending on how thick it's applied. Last I recall figure on about $10 per sqft. I've used it on wheel wells, bumpers and rocker panels with good results. Also hatch covers and machinery surfaces. It has many applications. It does get a tad chalky after being exposed to sunlight for extended periods of time.
