just bought a '07 XT225 and will trailer her home tomorrow. returned to dirt a few years ago on a 400 lb Adv bike and wanted to try something lighter. The bike is like new, 2k miles, with very recent tires and battery. All stock, no mods. Tough starting her but then test ride went well. PO rode at altitude, about 6000', and i plan to ride here in Taos between 7000 and 10,000 feet too.
Question: What simple mods should I do to help with Mountain trail riding and performance? or What needs to be seen to 1st on a 12 year old garage bike? I'm fairly competent with tools and such being a semi retired plumber.
thanks, promise my other posts will be shorter!

Welcome!

The bike likely just needs a basic going over. Check all the stuff that degrades with time... brake fluid, brake lines, fuel lines (add an in-line filter), etc...

Tough to start can be a couple things, these bikes are known to be pretty cold natured.

First thing... if you know the bike will sit for a day or several between rides, ride the last 1/2 mile home with the petcock in the off position. Leave it closed and open it only when you're ready to go again.

Second thing... the "3 turn mod". You'll find that mentioned a lot here. It's reasonably easy to do (carb removal not required) and involves setting the mixture screw to 3 turn out from a gentle bottom.

Third thing... make sure the choke is working and you don't have vacuum leaks.

Altitude... the airbox on these bikes is somewhat restrictive, so the general idea is to get more air rather than less fuel to compensate for the altitude. You can get a more freely flowing air filter such as a UNI. Then you can cut the snorkel in half or remove it completely. This will make the bike a bit louder but allows more air in. Beyond that, you can do the "Z1" exhaust mod or get an aftermarket exhaust and then dial in the jetting.

Welcome to the site as a new USER. Enjoy and ride safely.

You can change out your front sprocket to 14 tooth. Will help with trail riding yet give you 50+ on roads. If you want to go that fast. Go to the Learning Center for a blurb on lower gearing.

Large foot pegs are a must! See ad at right. Lots of other mods too which I'm sure will be suggested. Post on!

Here's how I do vacuum leaks...

1. Get a fire extinguisher.
2. Get a can of carb cleaner, brake cleaner, contact cleaner... something aerosol and flammable.
3. Start the engine cold.
4. Squirt little blasts of carb cleaner at all the plastic or rubber stuff on the carb and intake. Give it a little squirt in one spot and wait a second or two. If there's a leak where you've sprayed the fluid the engine will rev up for a few seconds as it's sucked in extra fuel.

Work your way around giving little squirts all around... both covers on the sides of the carb and the intake boot between the carb and cylinder.

Keep in mind that some things are getting hot fast and you're spraying a highly flammable liquid. Hence the fire extinguisher. AMHIK.

Great find with the '07 XT225 Gary. These are tough to come across these days in the condition you found yours. Follow PJMan's list of things to do, take good care of her, and you'll enjoy your lite weight Yamaha mountain goat for years to come! Enjoy the site and ride safely!..

Welcome. Have had my XT225 over 9000' in elevation with no mods and no problems. Just down on power but not much you can do except take more time getting around.
