Getting ready to install ceramic coated header pipe. Before I do, I took temperature readings in 3 places: header, mid-exhaust, and at the tail pipe. Surprisingly, the hottest reading I got was mid-exhaust, not at the header. Who woulda thought. These are the before readings:

The middle of the pipe doesn't have air blowing across it while you're riding.

Ceramic coated header pipe installed. It was $60 bucks. They coat inside and outside with lifetime warranty. I will ride today and see if there is a temperature drop. https://www.jet-hot.com

Did you ever figure out why the 1993 pipe wouldn't fit?

If I loosened the bolts holding on the back exhaust, it fit. Must be a slight variation in production.

Looks like a nice clean install. Glad you got it to fit. Yes I would believe some mfg tolerances could explain the fit. Or lack thereof. Ride safely.

My unscientific test shows a reduction in heat that I feel on my legs while riding. Very noticeable and more comfortable. Well worth the $60.00 to coat the header. Not sure how accurate the Harbor Freight heat gun is. I did two tests. Both came back around 195 degrees with ceramic, down from 222 uncoated.

Guys, I am thinking of selling this bike. I have put just 200 miles on since this near frame off restoration. What do you think the bike is worth? Thanks

Gary, the only 'value' anyone can put on your bike is what you think it should sell for considering it's mileage, its overall condition, and everything you've done to customize it. Once you have that figure in mind what you actually sell it for depends on how effectively you market it and how patient you are finding the right buyer.

There's a dealer in Show Low who's had a 2006 XT225 that looks to be in cherry condition with 7k+ miles on it. Some months back he had it listed it at $3900. Obviously it didn't sell. A short time ago I saw he'd knocked the price down to $2900 hoping to move the bike. Haven't checked whether that did the trick, but at least he's getting closer to the 'sweet spot' sale wise with what he's now asking for that '06.

Some years back I bought an '01 XT225 with 175 miles on it in new condition paying $1500 for it. But again, what your '02 is worth to you, and what you actually get out of it is a tune you'll have to play by ear. Find just the right buyer who appreciates the bike itself and values the time and effort you've put into it, and you may come close to what you figure it's worth.

Anyway, best of luck as you figure all the variables Gary. Hope the sale you have in mind comes together for you..

Generally, you'll have a really hard time getting your money back on this kind of work. You'll have to find a buyer who appreciates the effort and has similar taste. I'd say your average XT tire kicker wouldn't go much past $2000. You could remove stuff like the lights and horn and try to recoup some cost that way, but all your time is sunk.

That said, I'd go out and enjoy it and think a little longer about selling it.
