On the XT225, make sure you have the dampening rod loose (screw on bottom of fork). I'm assuming you have the inner fork tube removed. The seal is made from a light gauge metal ring. Should come out with pliers, screw driver or small pry bar. Just be careful not to bugger the ID of the outer fork tube. The seal, however, will get damaged on the way out. Good luck.

Hi guys carried on bashing having loosened the screw at the bottom of the tube and one came out with all the innards attached the other came out by itself without the innards. Have pushed it back and am now bashing away less violently. Hopefully be out tomorrow. I a working off the Haynes manual for the 1992 to 2000.
My bike is a 1987 Japanese built model. I got a catalogue of parts, in Japanese, for the 1987 which seems very close to the one in the Haynes. However there is a distinct difference in that at the bottom of each fork arm of my bike is a little capsule containing 3 screws one of which is graduated from 1 to 3. Any idea what that's for?

I'd gather that's a damping adjustment of sorts. On the XT225, there is a small pocket of fork oil that receives a plunger if the fork bottoms out. Acts as a cushion to prevent metal/metal damage. Obviously a rubber bumper won't work in there. There are other fluid orifices that control fork performance. Not adjustable on the US XT225. That would be my guess but I'm a tad out of my league and memory on this.
