Pulled my bike out of the shed after sitting for about month to go for a ride. After warm-up it moves from neutral to 1st gear properly. Start to head down the street and buttery smooth going from 1st to 2nd. But then when I try going from 2nd to 3rd the shifter wont move. It kind of feels stiff and locked in place. No click into gear. Nothing. So I try shifting back to 1st and try the process over. Once again buttery smooth from 1st to 2nd and then stuck with no shifter movement up to 3rd. I repeat this process several times and then randomly it does go into 3rd. Great, let’s try 4th, but now the shifter feels stuck going to 4th. From 3rd I try downshifting so I can repeat the process, but then again I can’t get from 2nd to 3rd. This goes on and on with several laps around the neighborhood. Occasionally, but rarely I can from 2nd to 3rd, but once in 3rd I never got to 4th. Forget even seeing 5th or 6th. Clutch is adjusted properly. Last oil change was about 300 miles ago with Yamalube 20/50 and didn’t notice any issues. My XT225 has about 5,400 miles on it. Any thoughts on what I should be checking. Let me know if there is more information that I can provide to get more help.

Make sure the chain has sufficient slack and oil it. A stiff or too tight chain will put tension on the counter-shaft and stiffen shifting.

Check the shift linkage to see if it is adjusted properly. Should be a 90 degree bend at the pivot point between the foot lever and the linkage.
2004 XT225 purchased new in October 2004 0 miles. Current miles over 27,000.

Found the problem and thought I should post back in case anyone else ever has a similar issue. First, let me say I am an idiot and feel stupid admitting what the real issue was. This shifting problem issue was really kicking by butt. I adjusted everything I could think to adjust. I searched this forum and the entire internet for suggestions and applied everything I found. I adjusted my clutch multiple times, adjusted my chain multiple times, lubed the chain real good. Verified the linkage was perfect. After no success I had to leave town on business so I wasn’t able to keep after it for about a week. Finally, I went back to work on the XT225 and no matter what, I would get all dressed for the ride and still shifting issues. Since I consider this bike a toy, I am adamant that I do all the work myself and never pay a shop to work on my bike, but after so many failed attempts I was beat down and resigned that the bike needed to go in the shop. This morning was the day I planned to drop the XT225 off at a local shop. I got up from bed and dressed like I would any other day at home. Before loading the bike in my truck I decided to give it one more try. Normally I am an ATGATT guy so I felt a little vulnerable hopping on the bike in a polo shirt, shorts and Nike running shoes, but against my better judgment that is what I did. When I started down the neighborhood street I was surprised that shifting was butter smooth going through all the gears. Turned around to come back the same way and butter smooth again. Light bulb goes off. I run inside the house and grab my boots (still wearing a polo shirt and shorts with my boots... a major fashion mistake). Try repeating what I just did, but with boots on, and now I can’t shift. Take off the boots and put back on the Nike running shoes. Again with my running shoes it is butter smooth. Second light bulb goes off. I recently upgraded from an entry level MX boots to much nicer Gaerne SG-12 boots. The new SG-12’s seem to fit under the shift pedal like my older MX boots, and I thought I had good feeling throughout the foot, but now I don’t think the new boots are allowing the shift pedal to return back to it’s natural position between shift maneuvers. When the shift pedal can’t return to it’s natural position, it can’t grab the next gear. I made a slight adjustment to the linkage, and a larger adjustment to how I worked my foot under the pedal and voila, no more shifting issues. Everything is butter smooth again, even with the boot on. The issue was hard to identify because I am so insistent on being ATGATT, even for test rides, and I was unable to detect that my new boots were the problem. It wasn’t until I was dressed in my daily clothes so I could take my bike to the shop that I was able to identify this issues. So, I still avoided the shop, and the costly fees, but it was a narrow miss. Moral to the story, check everything (clutch, linkage, chain tension, chain lube, etc.), but don’t overlook what new boots might be doing to how you shift. There, confessed my sin! Go ahead and flame me now.

Heh, well at least it was something simple and "user serviceable". . Likely most of us have been in that pair of boots a time or three! Happy Thanksgiving!

I wore my insulated hunting boots on a ride the other day and really had to work at shifting. Glad its not just me. No problem with my lighter boots.
