I rarely drop below 18 psi front unless riding lots of sandy washes (which happens frequently in CA's Anza Borrego desert). However, in many cases, the trails can go from sandy wash to hardpack w/rocks then back to sand again. So I opt for more vs less psi in that case.

Muniac - you mentioned Heavy Duty (HD) tubes - what brand/thickness do you use? I've heard STI Ultra HD tubes (4mm) are quite sturdy, other HD tubes seem to be 2.5mm - 3mm. I'm about to replace a rear tire and might as well get a good tube.

Others please chime in w/your tube choice + experience.

Regards

I've used Michelin H/D tubes, just hard work fitting them.

InsaneDiego - Sorry I missed your post and a bit late with a response. I have always used generic HD motocross tubes in both tires. I run 15 PSI front and 10-12 PSI rear for all off road riding. In the rocks and hard terrain I'm not aggressive with hard hitting riding. So pinch flats are very rare. Cactus tines were a much bigger problem when I was riding in AZ.

As for the rubber thickness on tubes, I've not measured it. I can tell out of the box they are heavy rubber. Good enough for my riding. I always check for leaks before installing HD tubes. I had several leak where the valve stem enters the tube. Sometimes the pinch bolt on the valve stem is loose too. I've had valve cores leak and/or be loose. Yes, on brand new tubes. As for brand, I will always buy a recognized name and select a premium grade. The few extra bucks you'll pay avoids problems I think by getting you better quality.

The HD tubes are more difficult to tuck into the tire. I will install tubes first by poking the valve stem through the rim. Then I'll work the tire over the tube there. Tuck the balance of the tube into the tire and pry them both over the rim. Check the rim tape and make spoke nipples are in place. There rear tires always SUCK! It's a job I hate. mad

The trick with this method is making sure the tube doesn't get pinched between tire bead and rim. If you're careful this won't happen. Watch the bead lock too making sure it's all the way in the tire cavity and not pinching the tube. I'll inflate to 35-40 PSI to set the bead then back down to 10-12 PSI.

Lubricant like soap or WD40 really helps when prying the tire on/off. I use 3 spoons and get Jeannie to help hold the 3rd. I'm glad when the job is done. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Paul49 & Muniac.

Haven't been on the site much, been riding too avidly!

I've dropped down a few lbs. (tire pressure - not me!) and been riding 15 PSI both front and rear which seems to work fine between sandy washes and densely rock-laden trails.

Anza Borrego is on fire with wildflowers...a true superbloom in CA deserts w/all the rain this year.

U R Welcome. I swear by lower tire pressures for trail riding. Caution indicated for pinch flats. I don't beat the bike over rock edges and haven't had pinch flat issues. Always use the HD motocross tubes. Cactus tines are another problem. Nothing stops them!

Hi:

Bead locks are a good thing when you "air-down" to real low pressures. In rocky terrain, especially when there's water, it's possible for the bead to work loose and the tire can spin on the rim with heavy front braking. Air-up after a wet and bumpy ride especially if you ride home on the highway.

Our typical tire pressures for trail riding are 15 PSI front and 10-12 PSI rear. No bead lock in front tire and haven't seen any problems with the tire spinning on the rim. But per above post, it's possible with really low tire pressures. Lowering the front pressure also increases the risk of a pinch flat. Never had any issues @ 15 psi with some 15k trail miles logged. Always used HD motocross tubes in both tires. Ride safely.

I run similar pressure to Muniac for trail riding with knobbies.

I back off the nut on the valve stem so if the tyre & tube move I know by the stem being at an angle instead of straight up. If it moves with the nut tight up it rips the tube at the stem. Same as if no rim lock fitted, you get a puncture, the tyre & tube move on the wheel & rip at the valve stem. Either happens, you need a new tube.
