Have had a couple great rides over the last month, Saturday was especially good! We rode from Boise to Trinity Mountain Lookup and back. About 140 miles overall...

We started out in Boise, met at a buddy's house. From there we rode out the old Oregon Trail east of town.

(See Oregon Trail marker in picture).

From there, we rode around the Danskin mountains, up the South fork of the Boise river to the little town of Prairie. Prairie to Trinity Mountain Lookup via other misc forest service roads. The elevation of the lookout is about 9,500 ft.

(See look out at the very peak of the mountain)

(You can barely see a forest fire off in the distance, fortunately we had a really clear day for the ride, the last 3-4 weeks have been pretty smokey here in Idaho)

We had lunch and headed back to Boise via the same route. We stopped in Prairie on the way back to top off. I got a little over 75mpg. Sometimes I wonder if I'm running too lean but she seems to run great, no issues. Plus I'm not into the throttle a whole lot..

As we are almost back to Boise, I hear a rock kick up, sounded kind of funny then hear this other hiss sound. The bike started to get a little squirrely... I pulled over, looked and I had a flat tire. Upon further inspection, a spoke broke and got shoved into the tire/tube causing the flat.

Fortunately we were close enough to Boise (10 miles away) that it was easier to call my wife to come get me then attempt to change the tube on the road.

All in all, it was a great ride for the labor day weekend. Made me realized that I probably wasn't prepared enough to change a tube on the trail. Highly recommended for those close to the area... or for those that do the Idaho Backcountry Discovery Route, I think it's an optional detour as the route passes within 10 miles or so of the site.

Anyway, hope you enjoy the pictures, they don't really do the view justice.

And for good measure, here's the elevation changes we went through...

Nice ride and thanks for posting. Go over to Stanley if you get a chance. Some nice motorized trails over that way. Not around the corner from Boise, however.

Looks like a great day riding. Bummer you got a flat, but at least you were close to home when I happened.

One trick to help prevent broken spokes from causing punctures is to put zip ties on the spokes where they cross. That will help keep a broken spoke from flapping around. Credit to Muniac for the idea.

Thanks for the tip guys! Been to Stanley many times, just never for riding. I've heard good things about riding up there, hope to get there someday. Regarding the zip tie tip, appreciate it, will have to try that out. The new spokes should be here tomorrow, hope to have time to fix it this weekend.

You can add some 3M super 88 electrical tape over the zip ties. Sometimes they get brittle and break. Tape makes the bond much stronger. We had numerous punctures from broken spokes before the light came on.

Stanley Lake.

Some nice meadow riding there too.

Good luck and ride safely.

What year is your XT225?
Just wondering...my 1992 had problems with the spokes on the rear wheel breaking. Not one problem with the spokes on my 2007, so I wonder if Yamaha made a change to the rear wheel at some time?

It's awesome up there in the Trinity's isn't it! I try to make it up there at least once a year. Last month I camped at Big Trinity lake for a couple of days when it was 107 degrees in town. The high was 75, sooo nice!

The bike is a '99 Deserteagle... in looking at the rear spoke part numbers for a 2007, 1999, and a 1992, they are all the same (according to rocky mountain ATV parts finder). There may be other design aspects attributable to the difference you are seeing but someone with more knowledge would have to answer that.

Love the picture Munaic, Stanley lake is one of my favorite places in the state. Deadwood Reservoir is another... The Trinity's might be in 3rd place for me now, as Skypup mentioned, nice and cool at that elevation.
