Hello, I recently purchased an XT225 that has been sitting for 5-6 years so I pulled the bowl off the carb and it was dirty inside. I cleaned it well and reassembled. It leaked fuel like the float was sticking even though the float moved freely when bowl was off. I took it off again and want the get to the float needle but I couldn't figure out how so I pulled the other jets/screws? cleaned and reinstalled. Now its getting no gas it seems. It will start for about a second and run out.

The float has a small pin that runs through two bosses. Serves as the hinge. I use a prick punch as a small impact hammer to push the pin out. Has worked well for me. With pin removed, float and needle will come out for inspection cleaning and/or replacement. Good luck.

You should remove the carb from the bike, and completely disassemble to clean it. Suggest getting a rebuild kit to replace consumable items.

Yep, I'd take the carb off and give it a thorough cleaning and replace the float needle/seat at a minimum.

Inspect the tank for rust.

When you re-assemble, set the mixture screw 2.5-3 complete turns out from a gentle bottom and add an in-line fuel filter.

Ok the carb was very dirty and I plan on getting a rebuild kit for it to do this winter. I unclogged the jets and can get it to run right after working on it but it absolutely hates cold starts as in damn near deadens the battery but once it running it will be somewhat ok. The "3" out setting screw was at 2 out when I got the bike and I'm now at about 2-3/4 out. It had been sitting for many years. I rode it 6 miles one way to work in the hopes that maybe thats all it needed to get running right again since prior attempts had only been momentarily. I did put new fuel line on and an inline filter and a new spark plug. I was looking at the carb kits on ebay and the pics that look your are 92-00 but mine is '01 and the '01+ kit has a odd looking float valve compared to what mine looks like.

Did you remove the mixture screw and clean the passage before adjusting it? If not, that's likely partially blocked. It's the smallest hole in the carb and usually the first to clog up. Blow it out with good carb cleaner and compressed air. Can be done with the carb on the bike. Be careful of the tiny washer and o-ring that's in there.

Ok I did a little more last night. The valves were way too tight so I backed them off some. Also I think I found the biggest problem which was the rubber piece that bolts to the motor that the carb slips into had a leak somewhere. Could here a air noise from the area and sprayed it with starting fluid and got an eratic jump in rpm so I ordered a new one. Hopefully my 10 mile ride didn't cause it too run too lean and cause premature damage.

The intake is a common source of vacuum leaks. It's rubber and will crack eventually.

Did you set the valves to the spec? I believe the exhaust is 0.006 - 0.007" and the intake is 0.002" - 0.004".

Yes thats where we set the valves. I was wondering if that vacuum leak would have caused it to run so lean that it hurt the engine? That kind of thing makes me nervous but maybe these are a little tougher than 2 strokes. I thought about pulling the pipe off the engine to look in at the piston and rings to see it the vacuum leak caused visible wear or if I'm just being paranoid.

I doubt you hurt anything due to the vacuum leak. Its a fairly common problem with older bikes (mine included).
