My beloveds bike with 9k miles on it has a leaking base gasket. So I need to strip it down. Obviously I will fit new rings.

But what should I do while im in there? Looking for more power so maybe skim the head? Porting?

Do you have a 225 or a 250? A big bore kit is available for the 250. https://procycle.us/bikepages/xt250.html#engine

This guy tried a lot of stuff...

Hmmm, maybe leave the base gasket out and use RTV. Like a free head skim.

I don't know that I'd do much more than flatten it, if necessary. If you fancy doing the math, compression ratio calculations are fairly simple. The hard part is cc'ing the head to determine it's volume.

What year is your bike? I wouldn’t skim the head but that’s just me

I am with Paul, keep it reliable. Higher compression won't make enough more power to notice and it will move your cam closer to the crank , the cam chain tensioner will run out of travel sooner. If you really want more power then bore it. I've heard they make big bore pistons for the 4 wheelers that fit the 225 and are very reliable.
