I wanted to be heard in Phoenix traffic when everyone is looking at their phones instead of driving.

I used the following:

- PIAA 85114 Slim Line 400Hz + 500Hz 112db Sports Horn Kit
- Stebel HF80 Wiring Harness for dual horns (MU-166) www.murphskits.com

The Murphskits wiring harness makes it easy. It has a built in 12 volt relay and is pre-wired to attach dual horns while keeping your stock horn in place. You get power for the relay from the XT’s stock horn harness connections. No cutting of wires needed. I mocked everything up next to the bike to make sure it all worked.

I attached the horns to the upper fork pinch bolts with a washer on each side. There is some fiddling with the horns to get the horn connectors to clear the fork tubes. You can rotate the horn within the plastic housing to make it fit.

I found a place in the frame to mount the relay assembly with a tie wraps.

The wiring harness connects right to the battery and has an in line fuse assembly.

I took a couple sound measurements with all 3 horns going off and got 119.2 decibels. I am going to charge the battery and see if I can get over 120.

The horns are very loud. In fact, if you don’t wear earplugs when you ride, these will hurt your ears. I do wear ear plugs so not a problem. Just want to be heard.

That's really LOUD!! But riding in Phoenix traffic means the louder you are the better, so those horns are a nice addition Gary. Ride safely and use them sparingly..

Sounds like a good idea with the horns. That petcock on the "on" position is kind of bothering me though. whistle

119dB, wow. Does the headlight dim or the idle slow when you hit the horn button?

The horns draw 2.7amps each but through a relay, the draw is right from battery. The headlight does not dim with the bike running or off. There is no operational impact to the bike.

Hi Gary,

Thanks for pointing me to this thread from the other horn thread.

I've only ordered the 500Hz PIAA horn. Was thinking about mounting it to the left side fork pinch bolt and then just wiring it in parallel to the contacts on the stock horn - for a simple 2-horn mod. Any reason why this won't work? Is the relay necessary?

I can't say if the relay is needed or not. I just understand the electric system on this bike is really limited for accessories so the best way to install the horn is with a relay.

This says 2.7amps per horn.

http://www.piaa.com/store/p/393-Automotive-Sports-Horn-400/500Hz.aspx

You could stick an ammeter on the stock horn and see how it compares to determine if it needs a relay or if the factory wiring is ok.
