I have a 1982 xt250. I have an oil leak coming from the bottom of the bike but I can't find where it's coming from. I thought it might be the clutch push rod but I'm not sure. I cleaned up the engine and the area around the clutch rod to see if I could find where the leak is coming from. After I cleaned it I started the bike to get the oil flowing and I walked away for one minute and came back and a decent amount of oil was in a puddle underneath the bike so I turned it off and then tried starting it again and when I did a pop came from somewhere and I don't know what it could be. If anyone has any suggestions or tips please help me. Thanks everyone.

There's a few locations for typical leaks. The best way I know to find them to clean up the bike and remove the skid plate (if it has one). Then dust the crankcase with baby powder or flour, something white that will soak up the oil and point you to the source of the leak(s).

The pop may have come from the exhaust... unburned fuel building up from sitting and idling. That's really nothing to be concerned with, if that's what it was.

A leak that pronounced should be able to be spotted by eye. And pretty quickly too. On the XT225, the shifter bushing wears and compromises the seal. Also the O-ring on the starter (probably not relevant). Common places for oil leaks. The engine cases have remained tight on our two bikes.

You might check that the oversized oil drain plug is screwed all the way in, not cross-threaded, and still has it's O-ring. Same with the oil filter cover; there is a large O-ring plus a smaller one on the lower-most bolt.

There is also an oil pressure inspection bolt just rearward of the spark plug; it gets removed for inspection. Seems like a leak there would be obvious but thought I'd mention it.

Hopefully it's something simple and cheap like a worn out O-ring or seal and not a cracked case.

Yes I've had wicking of oil from the drain plug do to a flattened O-ring. The threads on the plug are very delicate and easy to cross thread. It's the small spring on the filter screen that pushes the plug away from starting. Tricky.
