My neighbor is 88 and she still remains very active. Good genes help too. Try to eat properly, keep the mind engaged and stay physically active are good things to pay attention to for everyone. Some just don't like the outdoor or its activities. I think, in those cases, it's harder to keep active. Here we have easy access to unlimited outdoor activities at all levels. That's why we live here.

We're all doing the best we can.

"Remains very active" and "competent to ride a motorcycle" are different things. Unlike a car, a 2-wheeled vehicle leaves very little margin for error. I seem to have good genes, as my mother turned 96 last month, and still manages a B&B and 15 single family rental properties (although not well).

I'm fine with the XT225 and my wife's Grom (a gutless wonder whose popularity I really don't understand), but the 620 pound BMW is at 128,000 miles, and will probably not get past 135,000 with me as rider, as it's just too damned big. I hope I will have enough common sense to stop riding before proving that I am no longer competent. One thing I have noticed in the past few years is that I have to ride more frequently to keep my skills up.

My wife's granddad will be 91 in about 6 weeks. He was quite a baseball player in the '50's and coached high school basketball for years. He's still long and lean. He plays golf twice a week and has been shooting his age for more than 20 years, walks a lot, plays catch with my boys, still drives (though we worry more and more about that...), he's amazing. His father and uncle both lived to right at 101.

A bit of physical activity, a positive attitude, and good genes go a long way.

What motivates me more than anything these days is my Dad. He had both knees replaced a few years ago and one comment he made while rehabbing the first one has stuck with me.... "I had no idea how weak I'd become". He also had triple bypass about 15 years ago. Having seen all that first hand helps keep me motivated.

Strength training is very important. We hit the fitness center and pump the machines to take care of that. Discipline! Best part of the routine is walking out the door.

Strong muscle groups around the joints help avoid problems. A fitness regiment is good as the machines offer calibrated weight stacks. Over time you can see how the workout feels. Getting on any weak areas quickly. That said, 60 ain't 20 and it never will be. I've learned the art of scaling things which still keeps you moving, returns enjoyment and doesn't beat the crap out of your body. Train to maintain.
