So I just picked up a 1995 Xt225 that has 3000 miles on it for $100. It needed some work, but i got every thing working great. I put fresh oil in it. Any way, there is a whining noise coming from the engine, in the cam timing chain area. I dont know if this is a problem or not. I am planning a trip to Ouray Colorado with it in a couple weeks. I am not afraid to get my hands dirt and start taking stuff apart and diagnosing it. Just let me know what y'all think. Here is a url to the video of it running. It is a repetitive whining noise. The video doesn't give it justice, the whining is loud. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glYLR8Ub-wo

As you said, it's not very noticeable in the video. You pull the cam chain tensioner and make sure it's working properly and not rubbing. Next you could remove the side covers and check the guides. You could also remove the oil check bolt near the spark plug and verify oil flow to the head.
This shall pass, be still and know. 2006 XT225, UNI filter, ProTaper bars, MSR handguards, SS front brake line, Shinko 241's.

I had some funky noises coming from the cam drive gear cover on 1 bike. It turned out to be worn timing chain guides. Could be that and/or bearings too. If the clock is accurate, it would seem the engine has too little mileage for any issues.
We've broken speedometers too. Jeannie's bike had a new one put on a few seasons ago. Obviously its odometer doesn't reflect the true mileage on the bike. Just a thought.
A compression check isn't a bad idea either. Our bikes will develop 145 Lbs with 14k of hard miles on them. Just for reference.

I can definitely hear it. Repetitive whirring noise.
Some good things to check already mentioned by these fine gentlemen.
Beyond that, I'd say ride it as much as you can before your trip. If it seems to be getting worse, then dig deeper. If it seems to be getting quieter over time, just roll with it. If it sat for a really long time, there could be a dry/rusty spot somewhere that is causing it, or perhaps the cam chain itself has a few links that aren't 100% frictionless.
The reason I say ride it alot is because I had a similar "whirrr-whirrr)" pattern in 3rd gear (or was it 4th?) for a while after I bought my bike. It worried me a bit, but I kept riding it. After a few thousand kilometers, it vanished.
Helluva deal on that bike!
