http://www.ironbutt.org/certified.htmI checked the list and it looks like 2 people have gotten an Iron Butt certification on an XT-225. I don't see an XT-250 on the list. Gary Lodwick Scottsdale, AZ 07/19/12 Yamaha XT225 1,005 Luiz Medeiros Santa Maria, BRAZIL 06/14/01 Yamaha XT225 1,128 I'm thinking of trying this on my XT-250. I'm also thinking it would be REALLY challenging. Anyone else considered this? I searched the forum, saw one thread from over ten years ago where someone considered it briefly and then apparently decided against it. Thoughts? I have a mechanically stock XT-250 that I'm about to do the first 600 mile oil-change on this weekend that I'd be using for the attempt. I have a 16-tooth front sprocket for it that I will likely install before the trip. I still haven't decided 100% on the idea.

Iron butt on an XT? That's some serious iron butt. What ride do you intend to do to enter? I know a couple people who've done SS1000's on bikes that cruised along easily at 80. I'd plan an oil change in the middle.
This shall pass, be still and know. 2006 XT225, UNI filter, ProTaper bars, MSR handguards, SS front brake line, Shinko 241's.

It would definitely be the SS1000. I did a SS1000 on a Harley Street Bob a few years ago and it wasn't that big of a deal. I did a SS2000 on a 650 V-Strom a couple of years ago and THAT was pretty challenging. So I kinda know what I'd be in for, and realize that the XT is not the ideal bike for rides like these. But that's what makes it interesting to me. Not knowing for sure if I'd be able to do it or not. That, and seeing that as far as I can tell at least nobody has done it on the XT250. I live in North Carolina. It's a straight shot down Hwy 95 into Florida. That's the route I took for the first SS1000 I did. Down to Daytona Beach and back is an easy way to tick off 1000 miles in a hurry.

To me, a top speed of about 75 just isn't conducive to extended stints on the interstate. Mine gets hot and starts burning oil after 15 miles or so. A newer 250 might not have that problem.

Never went for long distance myself, but rode back and forth regularly from Chicago to Champaign-Urbana Illinois on my Yamaha YDS-3 and YR-1, and now and then to Lake Geneva in Wisconsin.
A friend drove his Bridgestone Hurricane (200cc) down to Daytona Beach from C-U; I thought that was incredible at the time. That little bike was pound for pound a real stormer for it's time (chrome bores and twin rotary valves...we got it to go even faster yet!)

Morning Shag67,
I've done a few 700 mile days on my XT250, even in the UK. They'll do it with ease and I managed well over 90,000 miles, in five years before she was written off in a hit n run accident.
If you mainly do road miles then the 16 tooth sprocket really helps and she'll then cruise along at a very comfy 60 to 65 mph. Yes she'll go quicker than that but you'll find that once you get some serious mileage on her that the oil consumption increase, so it's better to keep her down to 65 mph. Also when you fit the 16 toother, you'll find that the speedo reading is absolutely spot on when measured against a GPS.
Regards
Reggie
