When I retired in 2008, Emory had a webdrive service, with each user allocated 100 Mb of space. A year or two after retirement, the quota for retirees was cut to 50 Mb, but that only meant that new additions couldn't be made; existing content remained available. Emory eventually got rid of webdrive entirely, and switched to Box, which I didn't care to use. In 2006 I rode by motorcycle to Alaska and back, and I maintained a blog (without blogging software), The Lone Librarian Rides Again, during the entire 45 day trip, updating almost daily. Although I have locally stored copies of every page and photo from the trip, I never got around to re-creating the web site, which I assumed was gone forever. On a lark this morning, I found the entire site preserved in the Internet Archive. What a lovely Christmas present!
Don't fix it if it ain't broke, don't break it if you can't fix it.

Read your first four installments, Seldon. Really interesting! What a great find to discover that your ride blog still exists!

There are a few typos and dead links, mostly to photos, but since it's an archival snapshot, they can't be fixed.
This ride was one of the peak experiences of my entire life. I figured that if I didn't do it at age 60, I would never be able to. At 70, I can say that I was completely right.

..This ride was one of the peak experiences of my entire life. I figured that if I didn't do it at age 60, I would never be able to. At 70, I can say that I was completely right.. I absolutely know what you mean, Selden. I rode till I turned 77 this past summer. Couple of close calls riding rugged back country single track solo convinced me it was time to hang up my boots. I've never once doubted it was the right decision at the right time. Put a bike down hard when I was 18. Spent time in the hospital. Fortunately I came away scarred but otherwise intact. Otherwise the years I rode were injury free, and I'm determined to keep it that way as long as possible. When young and dumb, thinking I was bullet proof, it took a serious accident to convince me I wasn't. Now that I'm a lot older but still in one piece I'm done pushing the envelope any further than I've already pushed it. Know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em. Know when to walk away..! At 77 it was time to fold 'em and walk away. Here in the mountains, where there's no one to ride with but the wind and no room for error on the trail, it was the right thing to do..

Looks like a really good trip. I'd like to visit Alaska at some point. A friend of mine did a very similar ride to yours there-and-back a couple years ago.
Now that you've found the archive link, save it for off-line use and then you'll have it saved for posterity.
This shall pass, be still and know. 2006 XT225, UNI filter, ProTaper bars, MSR handguards, SS front brake line, Shinko 241's.

I've always had a local copy saved for offline use, just never got around to re-building the web site on a different platform.

Now that I'm a lot older but still in one piece I'm done pushing the envelope any further than I've already pushed it... Listen up, you young whippersnappers: Az4x4 is spot on. It's normal when you're young to think you are bullet proof; you're not. That doesn't mean you shouldn't push the envelope to find your limits, just be aware that there are consequences. Az4x4 and I (and I suspect several others here) are old enough to have a pretty good idea where those limits are. I suspect that I'm going to be an absolute PITA to live with when I hang up my helmet. Giving up the car keys will be even worse.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke, don't break it if you can't fix it.

Just finished the first four pages. Thanks for sharing. My brother and I just rode from Washington to the Arctic circle and back in June of last year. What an epic ride. We want to do it again within the next few years. We did our ride on 650 KLR's. That's what got me into riding DS. Thanks so much for Sharing.
