Cool. Doesn't look that different. It's worse though. Muniac and Zoomess probably could do it, but we started digging into the gravel and scree; gave up after about 1/3rd up...in spite of finally pushing the running bikes alongside us. Gravity beat us... I did it before on the Gas Gas and IT400, but not this time. Alexd

That's a tough climb and I recall a somewhat bad section further up. Last time we were up there it was just hiking around. It's a pretty area and worth exploring. None of it ever warrants an injury, however.

Here are the two of us (me not in the picture because I'm taking it) coming down very disgusted. The harder part is higher and behind us. Alexd

Cool. Doesn't look that different. I did it before on the Gas Gas and IT400, but not this time. Alexd I'm probably at least as good a rider now, as then. But the Gas Gas weighs less than 200 pounds and has maybe 25HP. The IT400 weighs the same as an XT but with maybe 35 HP. In both cases, an advantage compared to the present XT225s. Alexd

Brings back memories. As I said, it's a tough climb. The XT can get up this but perhaps isn't the best tool for the job. Suspension and rear tire width being the most limiting factors. A trials tire works well in this type of soup. Good traction and it helps suck up the bumps.

The thing is that there are optimum speeds (for people with my skill level) to climb through the scree/talus. And while the XT seems capable, the higher speed leads to less time for corrective action, if a slide begins; the consequences being serious injury or death, with the narrow trail and sharp drop off.
So, like many things, weight, HP, tire treads, tire width, suspension, etc. when optimized have excellent effects...driver skill probably is most important. I suspect that World Class Trials and Motocross riders could do it on a Moped.

Yes, the most important thing on a fun ride is to not get hurt. Best insurance policy is good judgment and riding within skill levels. Knowing when to turn around doesn't hurt either. And what puddles to avoid.
